3 Scholarship Details UC is one of only 12 schools participating in the program Financial assistance: Scholarship for three years of $3,000- $10,000 a year depending on demonstrated need Career guidance and mentoring throughout program Annual Kemper Scholars Conference for three years (in Chicago in August) Two Summer Internships, which are assigned by the Kemper Foundation  Program Goals: introduce you to how professional organizations, especially those related to insurance industry, operate and show how the skills acquired through liberal arts education prepare you for success in management and leadership

4 Summer Internship – After Sophomore Year Internship placement at Chicago area organization with focus on project-oriented work in administration, finance, or other areas of relevance in non-profit environment  Examples of assignments include management, client relations, finance, organizational strategy Includes stipend and housing Recent internships:  The Field Museum  Art Institute of Chicago  LookingGlass Theatre  Music Institute of Chicago  WTTW-11/WFMT- Public Broadcasting

5 Summer Internship – After Junior Year Internship placement at Kemper Insurance Company Cities: Chicago, Dallas, Jacksonville, Oklahoma City, St. Louis, Scranton Range of fields: marketing, communications, finance, investments, HR, IT web design, underwriting Kemper Scholars are invited to state their preferences from among a list of posted internships (although placements by the Foundation cannot be guaranteed)

6 Qualities of a Kemper Scholar Engaged in extracurricular activities and/or community service Demonstrated leadership ability Committed to the liberal arts Intellectually curious, independent Openness, maturity, flexibility Broad interests Need and opportunity

7 Qualities of a Kemper Scholar Demonstrated record of high academic achievement  Scholars usually have 3.50 GPA or better, both in high school and college  A minimum 3.00 GPA in fall semester is required and must be maintained as a Kemper Scholar Interested in exploring careers in organizational leadership and management  Diversity of majors and career interests (students who do not know what they want to pursue as a career are also encouraged to apply)  Exclusion: those with their own field work and internship requirements (nursing, social work, education)

9 Guidelines for References At least one reference should be from a high school teacher or Ursinus College professor, who can speak to your intellectual and academic capabilities The second reference can be from an Ursinus College professor, advisor or coach OR a high school or pre- college mentor (teacher, counselor, coach, employer) Writer of reference receives link to form they complete and submit directly to the Kemper Application site Reference deadline: Sunday, January 31, 2016

10 Guidelines for Essays Distinguish yourself: write essays that are a genuine reflection of your individual uniqueness  Show us who you really are, how you really think, how life experiences have shaped you Be true to yourself: answer questions honestly and thoughtfully Proofread your written statements!  Ask others for feedback on content, spelling, grammar, etc. No changes can be made to your application after the January 15 deadline.

11 Applicant Screening Process & Timeline Friday, January 15, 2016: Application deadline Sunday, January 31, 2016: References deadline February: Kemper Scholarship Committee evaluates applications and narrows applicant pool to 6-8 candidates Late February/early March: Scholarship Committee interviews candidates and selects 3 finalists Mid April: Jerry Fuller, Kemper Foundation Executive Director, interviews 3 finalists Early May: Jerry Fuller selects the Kemper Scholar
