Early Indus Cities By 2500 BC the Indus Valley was home to the civilization known as the Harappan Civilization. The two main cities were Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro.

Harrapan cities had a strong central government which led to organized cities. Their cities were laid out on a grid system, like we design our cities today.

Indus Valley people used seals
Indus Valley people used seals. This shows they had a well developed writing system, even though we cannot decode it.

Some of their seals show us that they had a polytheistic religion.

Their system of weights and measures influenced the modern day metric system.

And they created the first known algebra.

They also had the first indoor plumbing and city drainage system (wells, bathrooms, running water.)

These rings were found in Harrapa. Legend says they were the rings of a 17th century giant saint (religious figure).

Harappan civilization came to an end around 1500 B.C. No one knows why.
