Unit 2: Biochemistry

Objective A: Introduction to Biochemistry Unit 2: Biochemistry

Warm UP Write the following review HOMEWORK questions on a piece of lined paper to complete for homework due next class: 1. What are the 6 most common elements in living things? 2. What are reactants? 3. What are products? 4. Draw and Label a pH scale. 5. Compare and contrast acids and bases. Include one example of each.

Record the data table and description for your reference. On a piece of graph paper, graph the following data making sure to have all parts of the graph!!! Write your name, date, number and turn it into the green bin when done! Be careful when choosing the type of graph!

Atom Basic unit of matter

Element Pure substance that consists of only one type of atom

CHONPSCHONPS What elements are living things made up of?! There are 6 most common elements! arbon ydrogen xygen itrogen hosphorous ulfur CHONPSCHONPS Can you come up with a trick to remember the six most common elements?

Blue + Yellow  Chemical Reactions Green Requires -Reactants: atoms of molecules involved in the change; found to the left of the arrow -Products: resulting atoms or molecules; found to the right of the arrow

 Concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution pH

 Measurement system to indicate pH  Ranges from 0-14  -Acid: compound that forms H+ ions in solution and have pH values below 7  -Base: compound that produces hydroxide (OH-) ions and have pH values above 7  -Buffers: weak acids or bases that can react with strong acids or bases to prevent sudden changes in pH pH Scale

Draw the following on the back of your notes! We will pick up with this on Wednesday! LiquidpH Indicator Paper/Color pH ValueLiquid ID 1 2 3 4 5

1. Use your textbook pages 40-43 to find the correct response to your True/False worksheet on water! On lined paper, write the number, the correct answer (T/F), and an explanation (you completed this the day of your test) *This and your review questions are due next class! (9/30)
