“Be Ye Holy, For I AM Holy” Leviticus 17-20

1 Peter 1:3-12 Please Turn In Your Bibles

Leviticus 17 1 Then YaHWeH said to Moses, 2 “Give the following instructions to Aaron and his sons and all the people of Israel. This is what YaHWeH has commanded. 3 “If any native Israelite sacrifices a bull or a lamb or a goat anywhere inside or outside the camp 4 instead of bringing it to the entrance of the Tabernacle to present it as an offering to YaHWeH, that person will be as guilty as a murderer. Such a person has shed blood and will be cut off from the community.

Leviticus 17:5-7 the goat idols 5 The purpose of this rule is to stop the Israelites from sacrificing animals in the open fields… 7 The people must no longer be unfaithful to YaHWeH by offering sacrifices to the goat idols. This is a permanent law for them, to be observed from generation to generation.

“the goat idols” “goat-demon, satyr, a spirit being that inhabits desolate areas.” Dictionary of Biblical Languages “The goat demon was a god that the Egyptians and other ancient Near Easterners worshipped. It was supposedly responsible for the fertility of the people, their herds, and their crops. They believed it inhabited the deserts. The Israelites were at this time committing idolatry with this Egyptian god. Even today the goat is a demonic symbol in Satan worship.” Tom Constable

Leviticus 17:10 you eats or drinks blood in any form, I will turn against that person and cut him off from the community of your people, 11 for the life of the body is in its blood. 10 “And if any native Israelite or foreigner living among you eats or drinks blood in any form, I will turn against that person and cut him off from the community of your people, 11 for the life of the body is in its blood. I have given you the blood on the altar to purify you, making you right with YaHWeH. It is the blood, given in exchange for a life, that makes purification possible.

Hebrews 9:22 (NLT) In fact, according to the law of Moses, nearly everything was purified with blood. For without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness.” “Throughout Scripture, it’s the blood that makes the atonement. Any theology that ignores or minimizes the blood isn’t founded on the Word of God.” Warren Wiersbe

We are Redeemed Ephesians 1:7–8 (NIV84) through his blood “In Him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that He lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.”

We are Justified Romans 5:8–9 (NLT) made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ “But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, He will certainly save us from God’s condemnation.”

We are “Washed” Revelation 1:5–6 (NKJV) To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood “…Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.”

We Are “Brought Near” Ephesians 2:13 (ESV) by the blood of Christ.” “ But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”

We are “Set Apart” Hebrews 13:12 (ESV) through His own blood.” “So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through His own blood.”

We are Cleansed 1 John 1:7 (ESV) the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” “But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.”

Hebrews 10:19–22 (NLT) And so by of the blood of Jesus. let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting Him. with Christ’s blood 19 And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place by of the blood of Jesus. 20 By His death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place… 22 let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting Him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.

Leviticus 17:12-14 14 The life of every creature is in its blood. That is why I have said to the people of Israel, ‘You must never eat or drink blood, for the life of any creature is in its blood.’ 12 That is why I have said to the people of Israel, ‘You must never eat or drink blood— neither you nor the foreigners living among you.’… 14 The life of every creature is in its blood. That is why I have said to the people of Israel, ‘You must never eat or drink blood, for the life of any creature is in its blood.’ So whoever consumes blood will be cut off from the community.

Genesis 9:4–6 (NASB95) 4 “Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. and from blood Acts 15:28–29 (NASB95) 28 “For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these essentials: 29 that you abstain from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication; if you keep yourselves free from such things, you will do well. Farewell.”

Leviticus 18:1-5 I am YaHWeH your God 3 So do not act like the people in Egypt, where you used to live, or like the people of Canaan, where I am taking you. You must not imitate their way of life. I am YaHWeH your God I am YaHWeH 1 Then YaHWeH said to Moses, 2 “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel. I am YaHWeH your God. 3 So do not act like the people in Egypt, where you used to live, or like the people of Canaan, where I am taking you. You must not imitate their way of life. 4 You must obey all My regulations and be careful to obey My decrees, for I am YaHWeH your God. 5 If you obey My decrees and My regulations, you will find life through them. I am YaHWeH.

Romans 12:1–2 (NLT) Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

1 John 2:15–17 (NLT) 15 Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. James 4:4 (NLT) 4 You adulterers! Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.

Leviticus 18:6 sexual relations with a close relative “You must never have sexual relations with a close relative, for I am YaHWeH.” “None of you shall approach any relative of his flesh to uncover nakedness” Leviticus 18:7 (NASB95) “You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father, that is, the nakedness of your mother. She is your mother; you are not to uncover her nakedness.”

‘Genesis 9:20–23 (NASB95) saw the nakedness of his father covered the nakedness of their father 20 Then Noah began farming and planted a vineyard. 21 He drank of the wine and became drunk, and uncovered himself inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it upon both their shoulders and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were turned away, so that they did not see their father’s nakedness.

Leviticus 18:9-17 granddaughter…They are close relatives, and this would be a wicked act. 9 “Do not have sexual relations with your sister or half sister…your granddaughter…your stepsister…your father’s sister…your mother’s sister…your aunt...your daughter-in-law…your brother’s wife…both a woman and her daughter...her granddaughter…They are close relatives, and this would be a wicked act.

Leviticus 20:10-21 10 “If a man commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife, both the man and the woman who have committed adultery must be put to death. 11 “If a man violates his father by having sex with one of his father’s wives, both the man and the woman must be put to death, for they are guilty of a capital offense…

Leviticus 18:21 a sacrifice to Molech 21 “Do not permit any of your children to be offered as a sacrifice to Molech, for you must not bring shame on the name of your God. I am YaHWeH.

Leviticus 20:1-3 “If any of them offer their children as a sacrifice to Molech, they must be put to death. 1 YaHWeH said to Moses, 2 “Give the people of Israel these instructions, which apply both to native Israelites and to the foreigners living in Israel. “If any of them offer their children as a sacrifice to Molech, they must be put to death. The people of the community must stone them to death. 3 I myself will turn against them and cut them off from the community, because they have defiled my sanctuary and brought shame on My Holy name by offering their children to Molech.

2 Timothy 3:1–4 (NIV84) 1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money… 4 lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God…”

Leviticus 18:22 “Do not practice homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman. It is a detestable sin.” Leviticus 20:13 “If a man practices homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman, both men have committed a detestable act. They must both be put to death, for they are guilty of a capital offense.

1 Corinthians 6:9–11 (NASB95) nor effeminate, nor homosexuals… Such were some of you; but you were washed 9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals…will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.

Leviticus 18:23 “A man must not defile himself by having sex with an animal. And a woman must not offer herself to a male animal to have intercourse with it. This is a perverse act.” Leviticus 20:15 “If a man has sex with an animal, he must be put to death, and the animal must be killed.

Leviticus 18:24-26 Do not defile yourselves in any of these waysthe people I am driving out before you have defiled themselves in all these ways. You must not commit any of these detestable sins. 24 “Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, for the people I am driving out before you have defiled themselves in all these ways. 25 Because the entire land has become defiled, I am punishing the people who live there. I will cause the land to vomit them out. 26 You must obey all my decrees and regulations. You must not commit any of these detestable sins. This applies both to native-born Israelites and to the foreigners living among you.

Leviticus 18:27-29 28 So do not defile the land and give it a reason to vomit you out, as it will vomit out the people who live there now. 27 “All these detestable activities are practiced by the people of the land where I am taking you, and this is how the land has become defiled. 28 So do not defile the land and give it a reason to vomit you out, as it will vomit out the people who live there now. 29 Whoever commits any of these detestable sins will be cut off from the community of Israel.

Leviticus 18:30 of these detestable practices I am YaHWeH your God 30 So obey my instructions, and do not defile yourselves by committing any of these detestable practices that were committed by the people who lived in the land before you. I am YaHWeH your God.”

The sexual sins to which Moses referred break down the structure of society by breaking down the family. Moreover they evidence a lack of respect for the life and rights of others. Furthermore they cause diseases. By prohibiting them God was guarding His people from things that would destroy them. Destruction and death are always the consequences of sin. Tom Constable

We live in a sex-saturated society. It laughs at monogamous marriages, encourages abortion as a means of birth control, promotes and endorses kinky sex as a means of entertainment, claims that moral absolutes don’t exist, and really believes that people can violate moral standards and escape the consequences. Fulton J. Sheen was right when he said, “The Victorians pretended sex did not exist; people today pretend that nothing else exists.”

Today, there are both secular and religious organizations that openly espouse an immoral lifestyle contrary to God’s Word; in God’s eyes, they’re making society sick. The picture here isn’t a pretty one. Sexual perversions are like disease germs; they make a society and a nation sick. Then the land itself becomes sick and must vomit out its filthy people the way a human body vomits out poison. How tragic that people made in God’s image should end up as vomit! Warren Wiersbe

Leviticus 19:1-2 You must be holy because I, YaHWeH your God, am holy.” “YaHWeH also said to Moses, 2 Give the following instructions to the entire community of Israel. You must be holy because I, YaHWeH your God, am holy.”

1 Peter 1:14–16 (NLT) “You must be holy because I am holy.” 14 So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. 15 But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. 16 For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.”

Leviticus 19:3 3 “Each of you must show great respect for your mother and father, and you must always observe my Sabbath days of rest. I am YaHWeH your God. Leviticus 20:9 “Anyone who dishonors father or mother must be put to death. Such a person is guilty of a capital offense.

Leviticus 19:4 4 “Do not put your trust in idols or make metal images of gods for yourselves. I am YaHWeH your God. Exodus 20:4–5 (NLT) 4 “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. 5 You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, YaHWeH your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods.”

Leviticus 19:9-10 Leave them for the poor and the foreigners living among you. I am YaHWeH your God. 9 “When you harvest the crops of your land, do not harvest the grain along the edges of your fields, and do not pick up what the harvesters drop. 10 It is the same with your grape crop—do not strip every last bunch of grapes from the vines, and do not pick up the grapes that fall to the ground. Leave them for the poor and the foreigners living among you. I am YaHWeH your God.

Leviticus 19:11 “Do not steal. “Do not deceive or cheat one another.” Ephesians 4:25–29 (NASB95) 25 Therefore, laying aside falsehood, SPEAK TRUTH EACH ONE of you WITH HIS NEIGHBOR, for we are members of one another… 28 He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need.

Leviticus 19:12 “Do not bring shame on the name of your God by using it to swear falsely. I am YaHWeH.” “To take the name of God in vain is not merely to use it as a curse word but to invoke the name of God to support an oath that is not going to be kept.” Harris

Leviticus 19:13 “Do not defraud or rob your neighbor. “Do not make your hired workers wait until the next day to receive their pay.” James 5:4 (NASB95) 4 Behold, the pay of the laborers who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld by you, cries out against you; and the outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth (“Hosts”).

Leviticus 19:14-15 14 “Do not insult the deaf or cause the blind to stumble. You must fear your God; I am YaHWeH. 15 “Do not twist justice in legal matters by favoring the poor or being partial to the rich and powerful. Always judge people fairly.

Leviticus 19:16 16 “Do not spread slanderous gossip among your people. “Do not stand idly by when your neighbor’s life is threatened. I am YaHWeH.

Ephesians 4:29–31 (NASB95) 29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. 30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.

Leviticus 19:17 Confront people directly so you will not be held guilty for their sin. 17 “Do not nurse hatred in your heart for any of your relatives. Confront people directly so you will not be held guilty for their sin. Matthew 18:15 (NASB95) “If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.”

Leviticus 19:18 love your neighbor as yourself “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against a fellow Israelite, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am Y A HW E H.” 39 “The second is like it, ‘Y OU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ Matthew 22:36–39 (NASB95) 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And He said to him, “ ‘Y OU SHALL LOVE THE L ORD YOUR G OD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ 38 “This is the great and foremost commandment. 39 “The second is like it, ‘Y OU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’

Leviticus 19:26-27 28 “Do not cut your bodies for the dead, and do not mark your skin with tattoos. I am YaHWeH... I am YaHWeH your God. 26 “Do not eat meat that has not been drained of its blood. “Do not practice fortune-telling or witchcraft. 27 “Do not trim off the hair on your temples or trim your beards. 28 “Do not cut your bodies for the dead, and do not mark your skin with tattoos. I am YaHWeH... 31 “Do not defile yourselves by turning to mediums or to those who consult the spirits of the dead. I am YaHWeH your God.

Leviticus 20:6-27 7 So set yourselves apart to be holy, for I am YaHWeH your God 8 Keep all my decrees by putting them into practice, for I am YaHWeH who makes you holy… 6 “I will also turn against those who commit spiritual prostitution by putting their trust in mediums or in those who consult the spirits of the dead. I will cut them off from the community. 7 So set yourselves apart to be holy, for I am YaHWeH your God. 8 Keep all my decrees by putting them into practice, for I am YaHWeH who makes you holy… 27 “Men and women among you who act as mediums or who consult the spirits of the dead must be put to death by stoning. They are guilty of a capital offense.”

Leviticus 19:32-37 Fear your God. I am YaHWeH.. I am YaHWeH your God. 32 “Stand up in the presence of the elderly, and show respect for the aged. Fear your God. I am YaHWeH. 33 “Do not take advantage of foreigners who live among you in your land. 34 Treat them like native-born Israelites, and love them as you love yourself. Remember that you were once foreigners living in the land of Egypt. I am YaHWeH your God.

Leviticus 19:35-37 I am YaHWeH your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt. by putting them into practice. 35 “Do not use dishonest standards when measuring length, weight, or volume. 36 Your scales and weights must be accurate. Your containers for measuring dry materials or liquids must be accurate. I am YaHWeH your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt. 37 “You must be careful to keep all of my decrees and regulations by putting them into practice. I am YaHWeH.”

Holiness is thus attained not by flight from the world, nor by monk-like renunciation of human relationships of family or station, but by the spirit in which we fulfill the obligations of life in its simplest and commonest details: in this way—by doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with our God—is everyday life transfigured.” Hertz

Leviticus 20:22-24 23 Do not live according to the customs of the people I am driving out before you. It is because they do these shameful things that I detest them. 22 “You must keep all my decrees and regulations by putting them into practice; otherwise the land to which I am bringing you as your new home will vomit you out. 23 Do not live according to the customs of the people I am driving out before you. It is because they do these shameful things that I detest them.

Leviticus 20:24-26 I am YaHWeH your God, who has set you apart from all other people… 24 But I have promised you, ‘You will possess their land because I will give it to you as your possession—a land flowing with milk and honey.’ I am YaHWeH your God, who has set you apart from all other people… 26 You must be holy because I, YaHWeH, am holy. I have set you apart from all other people to be my very own.
