5 5 Pilot-Scale Vertical Combustor Research Facility (VCRF) at CanmetENERGY

6 State-of-the-art, 0.3 MW th combustion test facility that can operate in both air- and oxy-fired modes Natural gas, coal, coal slurry, oil, bitumen and emulsified bitumen can be burned in a controlled environment Equipped with air pollution control devices for removal of NO x, SO x, Hg, and CO 2 from the flue gas stream Equipped with advanced process and continuous emission monitoring (CEM) systems Equipped with a synthetic flue gas system that can mimic a wide range of combustion flue gas compositions VCRF Features & Capabilities VCRF 6

7 In air-fired mode, CO 2 concentration varies between about 4% to 15%, depending on the fuel and combustion conditions In oxy-fired mode, CO 2 concentration varies between about 55% to 85% or higher, depending on the combustion conditions and air leakage VCRF is fully integrated with two CO 2 capture technologies: –PCU: Solvent-based (for air-fired mode) –CanCO 2 : Low-temperature physical separation (for oxy-fired mode) Spiking the flue gas with CO 2 to adjust the concentration is also achievable VCRF Features & Capabilities CanmetENERGY’s 0.3 MWth VCRF integrated with CO 2 Capture Unit (CanCO2) 7
