WARM UP 1.NH 3 is a base under which of the definitions of acids and bases? Which definition does it not fit into?
2
Acid/Base Naming
3
Naming Bases Write name of cation Write hydroxide on the end Ex. – NaOH = sodium hydroxide
4
Naming Acids Simple acids (single anion) – Use prefix hydro- with anion name – Change ending of anion to –ic – Write acid at end Ex. – HCl = hydrochloric acid
5
Naming Acids Oxoacids (polyatomic anion) – Use anion name, changing ending to –ic – Write acid at end – If adding an O, add prefix per- – If reducing an O, change ending to –ous Reducing two O’s, add prefix hypo- Ex. – HNO 3 = nitric acidHNO 4 = pernitric acid HNO 2 = nitrous acidHNO = hyponitrous acid
