* Facts about increasing number in statistics on sex abuse among genders in different countries * The nature of sex abuse - the age of the victims (7 - 9 years old) – can be younger or older * It is a habitual behavior * One factor that causing sex abuse : child pornography * Effects of abuse on the child: * Psychologically * Socially * Academically * in health * We need to teach kids starting from kindergarten

* It is because more often a child being abused by a family members or people known to them. Mostly happens to boys’ eq. a case of pedophile. * Some facts found about children abuse children (younger) which is usually happen in school toilet. * Usually happens to threats silent victim, boys usually do to boys * Effect: traumatic sharing fears is one good way to make the victim talks. * Teacher should know how to ask for example ask him to draw his family first, draw a person you like the most, draw a person you hate the most, the most rudeness person from them you will get the answer.

* Counseling: * Victims (V) * Offenders (O) * Parents of V + O * Teachers (T) * Abuser’s parents usually denial teacher is mishandling. * Need a teacher’s training about differentiate between normal sexual curiosity vs. child abuse * Effects to child: emotionally disturb, pornography, etc. * Differentiate lesson for child protection for boys and girls * One strategy Child abuse victims usually doesn’t talk but we can ask him/her to draw * Victims often draw in angry colours such as red, black, purple.

* Top 10 strategic concepts school needs to be aware of * How schools collaborate with outside school parties to be included in solving the problems * School should know the techniques of investigation * Child protection cycle is a multidisciplinary set up

* Child protection problems generally faced by school are: * Dealing with uncertainties * Making important, complex decisions only a person who did it, s/he needs second opinion actually * Based on incomplete information * Clinging to original beliefs * The rule of optimism – natural loves – cultural relativism – holding into beliefs – school based norms. * Bias

* School needs a “Child Protection Development Plan” (needs to involve whole school stakeholders including boards). * Needs to refer to UN children’s rights (CRC) * Policy and procedures must include: * Safeguarding and child protection policy * Child pro-procedures * Discipline policy and procedures

* Once the identifying system works, be prepared for more loads coming for uncover abuses. * Needs safer recruitment of the staff as well in a written policy. * 3 steps: reporting recording monitoring * Needs an open minded investigation challenge each other in supportive way.

* There are 3 common forms of violence: bullying, harassment and abuse. * Teachers should be able to know the symptoms of a child being abused. * Bullying happens to/in between student-student, student- teacher or vice versa, and teacher-teacher. * Anti-bullying policy must include anti-bullying from: * Student to Student * Student to Teacher * Teacher to Student * Teacher to Teacher

* Sexual harassment = sexual assault * School needs to give training about bullying every year to both students and teachers for the common understanding. * School community needs to work collaboratively to write anti-bullying policy including board members. * Some strategies to do to anticipate bullying issues: * Observe behavior among S+S, S+T, T+S, T+T * Check if bullying or harassment happens * Do survey * See the classroom setup * How to conduct an investigation is about what do you see and what do you hear. It is a civil investigation NOT a police investigation. Civil investigator needs to make sure the person has being trained. * Policy should protect both students and teachers; eq. when you (teacher) are alone with a kid policy

* What should school stakeholders do to protect children? * How to create a safe school environment? * Who will get the benefits of having a safe school environment? Why?

1. Types of abuse or neglect: * Physical abuse * Sexual abuse * Emotional/ psychological abuse * Child neglect 2. School should know the symptoms of a child being abused & techniques of investigation needs training 3. Child protection cycle is a multidisciplinary set up – whole stakeholders involvement 4. School should develop a child protection development plan policy. Policy should protect both students, teachers & school community.

* It’s everyone’s responsibility to ensure that children are educated, empowered and protected. * Why? Child abuse and bullying can have lasting impacts on children's development, self esteem, relationships and confidence.
