Acid and Bases Day 76
3
Essential Question What household items in my house are acids and bases? What household items in my house are acids and bases?
4
Learning Target I can identify acids and bases commonly used in household items.I can identify acids and bases commonly used in household items.
5
Review: Writing Compounds Directions: On the left-side of your notebook, write the compound from the ion. 1.) Li 1+ and P 3- 2.) Na 1+ and NO 3 1- 3.) Ca 2+ and F 1- 4.) Mg 2+ and S 2- 5.) Rb 1+ and P 3-

Elaborate: Foldable Acids and Bases Directions: You will create a Foldable for acid and base notes. Step 1: Fold your sheet of paper the long way. Step 2: Turn your paper side-ways where it is long. Step 3: Draw a line down the middle to make two boxes.
7
Elaborate: Foldable Acids and Bases Directions: Step 4: On the front of the foldable write ACID in BIG capital letters in the left box. Step 5: On the front of the foldable write BASE in BIG capital letters in the right box.
8
Elaborate: Foldable Acids and Bases Directions: Step 6: Open up your foldable. Step 7: Draw a line down the middle to make two boxes. Step 8: On the top half of the foldable; on the left top box write the following title COMMON ACIDS. Step 9: On the top half of the foldable; on the right top box write the following title COMMON BASES.
9
Elaborate: Foldable Acids and Bases Step 10: Write the following information in the correct box. Common Acids Table Common Bases Table
10
Elaborate: Foldable Acids and Bases Step 11: Turn to the back of your foldable. Step 12: Draw a line down the middle of the foldable to make two boxes. Step 13: On the right box title the box Properties of Acids and on the left box title the box Properties of Bases.
11
Elaborate: Foldable Acids and Bases ACIDS Taste sourTaste sour CorrosiveCorrosive Turn litmus paper redTurn litmus paper red Produce H+ ionsProduce H+ ions React with certain metals (Zn, Fe, etc.) to produce hydrogen gasReact with certain metals (Zn, Fe, etc.) to produce hydrogen gas React with bases to form salts and waterReact with bases to form salts and water BASES Taste bitter feel slippery or soapy Turn litmus paper blue Produces OH- ions react with oils and grease react with acids to form salts and water Step 14: Copy the following information in the correct box.
12
Elaborate: Foldable Acids and Bases Step 15: Open to the inside of the foldable. Step 16: On the bottom of the foldable draw the following pH Scale. Step 17: The middle of the pH scale number 7 should be placed in the middle of the two boxes. Step 18: The acid side of the pH scale will be on the left box and the base side of the pH scale will be on the right box.
13
Elaborate: Foldable Acids and Bases Step 19: Copy the pH scale below inside of the foldable.
14
Engage: Acids and Bases Directions: On left-side, Copy and Describe the solution in each of the following as: 1) acid 2) base or 3)neutral. Using your notes. A. ___soda B. ___soap B. ___soap C. ___coffee D. ___ drain-o E. ___ water F. ___ grapefruit F. ___ grapefruit
15
Engage: Acids and Bases Directions: Copy on the left-side and Match the formulas with the names: A. ___ HNO 2 1) hydrochloric acid A. ___ HNO 2 1) hydrochloric acid B. ___Ca(OH) 2 2) sulfuric acid C. ___H 2 SO 4 3) sodium hydroxide D. ___HCl4) nitrous acid E. ___NaOH5) calcium hydroxide

Starter 1.H 2 SO 4 2.Ca(OH) 2 3.HNO 3 4.KOH 5.H 3 PO 4 6.HCl 7.NH 4 OH 8.Al(OH) 3 9.H 2 SO 4 10.HNO 3 Directions: Identify each compound as Acid or Base
18
Explain: Acid,Base, and Salt Directions: Copy in your notebook. When you mix an acid with a base you make a Salt and Water. Equation Acid + Base Salt + Water Example: HCl + NaOH NaCl + H 2 O (Acid)(Base) (Salt)(Water)
19
Explain: Salt Equations Practice Problems 1.H 2 SO 4 + Ca(OH) 2 → __ + H 2 O 2.HNO 3 + KOH → __ + H 2 O 3.H 2 CO 3 + NaOH → __ + H 2 O 4.H 3 PO 4 + Ca(OH) 2 → __ + H 2 O 5.HC 2 H 3 O 2 + KOH → __ + H 2 O 6.HCl + NH 4 OH → __ + H 2 O 7.H 2 SO 4 + Mg(OH) 2 → __ + H 2 O 8.HNO 3 + NH 4 OH → __ + H 2 O 9.HNO 3 + Al(OH) 3 → __ + H 2 O
