1. Smallpox By: Braden Fink, Riley Kohles, and Brian Trevino.

2. Introduction ●The Maya, Inca, and Aztec are all Ancient Civilizations. ●The Ancient Civilizations lived in parts of Mexico, Chile, and Peru. ●They all had a very bad disease called the small pox and many more.

3. Climate/Environment ●The Inca lived in Chile and Peru. ●The Aztec lived in present day Mexico City and on the shores of Lake Texcoco. ●The Maya climate was kind of tropical because they lived in a jungle/rainforest area.

4. How did Smallpox start? Why? ●The Spanish came over because they wanted to conquer and take their land and with them they brought a disease. ●The Spanish gave the natives blankets. They didn’t know that the blankets carried the smallpox virus. The Inca then contracted the virus by using these blankets and other “gifts” from the Spanish.

5. Body Systems Affected? ●Smallpox affects the circulatory system the respiratory system, the nervous system, and the immune system. ●When you have smallpox you could have vomiting, blindness, back pain, headaches, and dots on your body.

6. Immune System ●Smallpox affects the immune system because it’s killing the organs ●Organs affected: *Appendix *Spleen *Tonsils

7. Circulatory System ●Smallpox affects the circulatory system because it is making breathing harder for the person.

8. Respiratory System ●Smallpox affects the respiratory system because it swells the neck up and makes breathing harder too.

9. Nervous System ●When smallpox gets into your body it will travel to the nervous system and cause your back to hurt. ●It affect these parts: *Spinal Cord *Brain *Peripheral nerve

10. Symptoms ●You feel like you have the flu ●Vomiting ●Back pain ●Lose eyesight ●Bumps on your body

11. Fatality ●If you contract smallpox, you have a 1 in 4 chance of survival. ●The rash from smallpox can leave lasting marks and scars.

12. How do you get rid of small pox/ cure? ●You can not be cured from smallpox by waiting for the virus to go away. ●Keep skin clean. ●Medicine helps with fever and pain. ●Keep people with smallpox isolated, (away from others).

13. Who Does it Affect ●Anybody. ●Mostly young adults. ●Smallpox can affect babies to very old people.

14. Worst Time Period ●It was at its worst point during the 20th century when they were trying to find a vaccine that could get rid of the smallpox.

15. What does it do to your Body System ●Starts to break your body down and moves the disease around the body. ●Eats away your skin.

16. Vaccines ●They had labs in Russia and the U.S. that are holding the Smallpox and trying to get rid of it. ●Bill gates and donors have spent 5.5 billion dollars to find a vaccines for smallpox.

17. How did the Ancient Civilizations interact with other organisms in the physical environment to live (i.e. how did they get their energy)? They chose an island so the people that tried to come in couldn’t get in because of the water surrounding their empire.

18. How does the past influence the present? ●We learned that, today we have innovated the ways of preventing smallpox and the vaccines for them. ●Back then they had to wait till they went away. ●Today we have labs in Russia and the U.S. that are studying ways of getting rid of them.

19. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation ●They got donations of 150 million from the United Kingdom and other countries. ●They would go around and totally vaccinate an area, then move on to another area and do the same thing.
