Field Manual What should the manual include? – Roles and responsibilities – Mode of operation and conduct – Interview techniques – Details of sections and questions in the questionnaire – How to complete the questionnaire – Use of hand-held devices

Dealing with a poor enumerator Supervisor should monitor work – Paper verification needs to occur everyday – Supervisor should also be expected to conduct revisits – M&E should also conduct paper verification (e.g. 10% of questionnaires selected randomly) – M&E should randomly pick one or two interviews to attend; if dealing with problematic enumerators, focus on them Contingency plan needed Reserve list of enumerators – Train more enumerators than you require

Objectives of training To familiarise the teams with the objectives of the survey To ensure supervisors and enumerators understand each question and how it should be asked – A good opportunity to pilot the survey process, more particularly the data collection To explain the roles and responsibilities of the team – A good opportunity to discuss data quality and how checks will be conducted

Content of the training Discussion of procedures Discussion of roles and responsibilities Reading, discussing and using the questionnaire under classroom conditions – pre-testing – When dealing with local dialects, good opportunity to develop/share a lexicon A field-based practice – piloting Report and feedback from the piloting Plans for fieldwork

Summary The field manual and the training go hand-in-hand The manual is referred to throughout the training – An outline of a field manual has been included in the training package It is also a reference for the team while in the field Must be included in the survey archive
