Essential ?: How do I use verbs other than ser in sentences in Spanish?
2
Verbs So far, you have learned how to use one verb – SER You have learned to conjugate it Soy, eres, es, somos, son Conjugating means that you change the verb to match who is doing the action You must conjugate a verb if you are indicating someone is doing it.
3
Verbs There are three types of verbs -ar -er -ir This chapter we focus on –ar verbs.
4
Verbs A few things to know The “infinitive” of a verb is the verb when it is not conjugated (hablar), when it still ends in ‘r’ The verb ending refers to either the –ar, -er or –ir that you will remove The stem refers to the part of the verb that is not the ending (hablar: habl – stem, -ar – ending)
5
Pausa… Tell your pareja 3 things you learned so far. Add any new info your pareja tells you Together, write 2 questions on the left side of your notes and mark the answers on the right
6
Conjugating You need to remember the pronouns Yo = I Tú = you (informal -- you will learn more about this) Él = he Ella = she Ud. (Usted) = you (formal) Nosotros = we Vosotros = you all (only in Spain, we won’t use this) Uds. = you all (we will use this) Ellos/ellas = they
7
Conjugating When you conjugate a verb, just like with ser, there is a different form of the verb depending on who is doing the action. To conjugate an –ar verb, meaning if someone does the action, you will follow two steps 1. Remove the –ar ending 2. Add the new conjugation ending

Conjugating –ar verbs These are the conjugation endings you use Yo: -o Tú: -as Él/Ella/Ud.: -a Nosotros, vosotros and ellos/ellas/Uds you will learn next chapter

An example: Cantar – to sing Yo canto (I sing) Tú cantas (you sing) Él canta (he sings) Ella canta (she sings) Ud. canta (you [formal] sing)

12
Things to remember If you are naming one person or thing, use the él/ella form. Juan canta. El perro canta. Mi amigo canta.
13
Now you try…with estudiar ( to study) Yo Tú Él Ella Ud.
14
This is how it should look Yo estudio (I study) Tú estudias (you study) Él estudia (he studies) Ella estudia (she studies) Ud. estudia (you formal study)
15
Remember… You will “conjugate” a verb EVERY TIME you are indicating that someone is doing it. You will take off the –ar ending You will add a new conjugation ending
16
Pausa… Tell your pareja 3 things you learned so far. Add any new info your pareja tells you Together, write 2 questions on the left side of your notes and mark the answers on the right
17
Don’t forget your summary What did you learn? What was most important? How does this relate to what you already know? What was easiest? What will be most difficult?
18
Your homework… Look at your calendar and find all the verbs (starts with ‘necesitar’ and ends with ‘desear’.) You have to conjugate each verb the way you did cantar and estudiar Yo, tú, él, ella, Ud.
