About MELC ►Our Mission To Improve the health and welfare of children and their families by improving communication, resources, services, and coordinated action to eliminate lead and other environmental hazards from homes and the outdoor environment in the Metro East.

Metro East Lead Collaborative Outreach Campaign Childhood lead poisoning is a serious health concern for the region’s Children. Lead Poisoning is a condition caused most often by eating Lead paint chips or breathing or eating lead dust. Lead is especially Harmful to infants and children 6 years of age and younger. Lead poisoning Can slow a child’s development and cause learning and behavior problems. Even small amounts of lead can damage a child’s brain, kidneys, and stomach. Lead Free 2003 is a regional collaboration lead by The Metro East Lead Collaborative, Operation Weed and Seed St. Louis, and The St. Louis Lead Prevention Coalition. Within your community there are several simple things that you can do on a daily basis to prevent child hood lead poisoning.

Metro East Lead Collaborative ►Selected as 1 of 15 projects supported by the federal interagency environmental justice demonstration project. ►Finalized Action Plan. ►Leveraged over $10.2 million in funding support from several funding agencies. ►Cleaned 5 industrial sites, 3 residential areas, and assessed over 80 industrial and residential properties ►Implemented bio-solids remediation for one contaminated industrial property ►Provided blood lead screenings to over 4000 children ages 0-12 ►Trained over 30 contractors and 20 residents as lead risk assessors & supervisors ►E. St. Louis and St. Louis selected as a National Brownfields Showcase Community ► Remediated lead hazards in over 75 Metro East homes ►Implemented Lead Safe Yard Project Chipper/magnets/coloring books/activity sheets Key Accomplishments
