Stone
3

There are three main types of stone Igneous( 화성암 ) Sedimentary( 수성암 ) Metamorphic( 변성암 ) Rocks formed by melting, typically a granite which might contain obviousl mineral crystals. Usually the hardest and most durable stone used for worktops or hard wearing floors Rocks are laid down by wind or water, typically limestone or sandstone, perhaps containing fossils, can be very soft (chalk) or moderately hard. Too porous for worktops but commonly used for flooring. Rocks are sedimentary rocks altered by heat and pressure into something far harder, typically slate.

The use of stone within architectural interiors Zaha Hadid Clinically clean & modern, pure white concrete (or plaster / GRP) forms the walls & ceiling

Stone as Art Andy Goldsworthy Andy Goldsworthy is a British sculptor, photographer and environmentalist who was born in Cheshire in 1956. He began his art education studying fine art at Bradford School of Art. The now famous artist produces site specific sculpture and land art, using stone in many of his works

‘ Weight, balance, and symmetry are essential to creating the domes shape and preventing collapse. A circular hole, 600mm in diameter, was carved in the capstone, creating an opening Roof’ consists of nine hollow, low-profile domes of stacked slate. The stone is selected locally and each dome is 9M diameter & rises 1600mm Andy Goldsworthy
9
Zen symbolism-stone and water in harmony In Japan, stone and water symbolise yin/yang. Care is taken to balance the design elements, neither is dominant. Use is made of repeat patterns, texture and natural surfaces

The Romans were the first major users of concrete, the Coliseum in Rome was built of concrete and faced in stone Concrete After the Romans, concrete was all but forgotten, but emerged again over the last 200 years. Vast numbers of poorly built 1960’s structures however earned the material a bad reputation

In the Museum of Modern Literature, concrete has been used alongside limestone and hardwood, there is no applied decoration just the material’s natural finish. The Museum of Modern Literature-David Chipperfield Architects 2006

Concrete and contemporary design Concrete is being increasingly used in contemporary design schemes, polished, coloured, cast and transparent used increasingly because of their aesthetic qualities
