7. What do you think the role of the instructor should be in a university lecture? Instructors are responsible for assessing students' pre-existing knowledge and tailoring the course to that knowledge. They set explicit goals for learning, and help students achieve those goals through active participation in class, peer interaction, and knowledge construction. Instructors constantly monitor progress and provide timely, constructive feedback. An instructor is more a facilitator of knowledge construction than a source of knowledge transmission. Instructor should create an engaging learning environment to facilitate efficient learning of students with diverse backgrounds by using evidence-based active learning techniques.

14. What did you find most valuable about the Summer Graduate Teaching Scholars program? The interaction amongst grads and CTD members from a variety of perspectives helped me understand the ways in which my field's (and my own) expectations differ from those of others. This was not just important for understanding the variety of views of an educators' role, but was also helpful in piecing together what my undergrads' experience at UCSD is like. I found this very helpful for keeping myself honest about what I could feasibly set out to accomplish in my course, and what kinds of background expectations students might bring with them into the class.
