2. Session 1 – Creation vs. Evolution: What does the Bible say? Class goals: The Goal of this class is to look at the different interpretations Christians have among themselves on Creation & The Flood. We will be sticking to the Biblical, scriptural side of things and not so much the science for this class. Let’s actually read the text…

3. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” 7 Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. Most people stop there for the creation overview account, but it actually goes on a few verses into chapter 2! and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it was so. 31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.”

Gen 2:1-3: “Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. 2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the L ORD God made the earth and the heavens”

14. Exodus 20:11: “ For in six days the L ORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the L ORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.” The Bible clearly teaches that God created in six days and rested on the 7 th day, other areas in scripture also say this:

15. When we move to Genesis Chapter 2, we have a more detailed account of day six “ Then the L ORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. And the L ORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die. 18 And the L ORD God said, “It is not good that man should be alone…

16. I will make him a helper comparable to him. 19 Out of the ground the L ORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.”

17. “21 And the L ORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the L ORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. 23 And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man… God puts Adam in the Garden, and he tends to the Garden and names the animals

18. 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Jesus quotes this part of Genesis as literal history, and backs the idea of Adam and Eve being created at the beginning of the world Matthew 19:3-5: “The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?...

19. 4 And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? [] 6 So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” Jesus quotes Genesis as literal history and uses it to support marriage

Genesis 3 – The Fall and Curse Adam and Eve were told not to do one thing, and the serpent tempted them and they sinned Because of this sin many things changed: Genesis 3:17-20 “17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying…

21. ‘You shall not eat of it’: “Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life. 18 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field. 19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.” 20 And Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.”

Romans 8:18-22: “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope… There is New Testament confirmation

Sin and the curse did not just affect humans or the soul, it affected everything 21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now.”

24. Genesis 4 - Cain and Able One objection or question that often comes up is where Cain found his wife Genesis 4:16 “ Then Cain went out from the presence of the L ORD and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden.” The Biblical answer to this question is he married one of his sisters

Jude 1:14: “Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints,” Some ask if there are gaps in these pre-flood genealogies - there are two evidences there are not gaps First off is the listing of the ages inside the genealogies (not just generations) Secondly is a verse from the book of Jude:

The Bible teaches there was a flood that completely destroyed the world about 4400 years ago (Genesis chapters 6-8) Genesis 6:5-8: “And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth…

29. both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.” Noah was a righteous man and blameless in his generation, which may have a lot more implication than we think

Genesis 6:13 “And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.” God brings judgment on the world for their wickedness According to Genesis 6:19-20 Noah is to bring two of every kind of animal on the ark (not of every species)

31. God sends a worldwide flood Genesis 7:19 “And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered.” Genesis 7:20 Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.”

32. 2 Peter 3:3-6: “ 3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, 4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. 5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old… The New Testament also confirms what we’ve read about the flood

33. and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: 6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished” Many other places in the New Testament mention the flood and Noah We are told that at the end times people would be ignorant of creation and the flood, which is exactly the areas of scripture and truth that are being attacked today

34. 2 Peter 2:5: “ and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly;” Hebrews 11:7: “ By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.”

Noah’s flood shows us that God has the power to judge his creation, and that he has done it in the past The Bible is clear that there is another judgment coming, this time by fire After the flood Noah and his children repopulate the world, you have the Babel incident, and different languages are created by God
