Primary NER 64 % (male: 71 & female: 52) Survival Rate until 5th Grade 71% Dropout 33 % (male32.1 & female:33.9) Literacy rate 58 % (male: 69 & female: 47) Population of Kids 47% Girls are 52 % Out of School Children: Age group 05-09 6 + Million Age Group 10-16 14+ Million Age group 05-16 20 + Million Illiterates Youth illiterates 15-24 11 + Million (male 4.2 & Female 7) Illiterates 15+ (Total) 57 + Million (Male 19.7 & Female 33.3) Source: NEMIS 2013-14 and PSLM 2012-13 3 MICS Punjab 2014 Pakistan -Situation Analysis

Weak indicators &Women’s status 60.19% earn less than 2 $ a day 21.4% earn less than 1.25 $ a day (Pakistan Economic Survey 2013-14) Illiteracy; 1/3 rd, women illiterate more than men, adolescent, no alternative learning. Total 60 Million illiterate. High drop outs from schools Climate change affecting agriculture/water Terrorism, bad governance, too much centralization Population explosion, 13800 babies born daily; Maternal deaths: 1 every 20 minutes Women’s work largely unrecognized, definition needs to be upgraded Mobility an issue, status low, few choices to improve their lives Crimes against women large MDG’s indicators poor, not achieved

KNCU Major Results 2915 adult females made literate. 800 Post literacy messages via ICT (Mobile Phones) Imparted vocational training in embroidery and stitching to 1165 learners. 142 teachers (107 adult literacy & 35 ECCE ) were trained, 24 Instructor in Dress making & Embroidery 915 children (ages 3-5) enrolled in ECCE centres Sustainability of project activities– Capacity of 476 members of the local village committees was strengthened. 165 members of school councils were trained/oriented to reduce drop out, and enrolling out of school children Imparted early childhood care and education to180 teachers, facilitators, parents and caregivers 1596 out of school children enrolled in formal schools. 86 teachers were trained/oriented on financial literacy 926 Computerized National Identity Cards (CNIC’s) were made with the support of NADRA. 95 teachers were oriented on first aid by Rescue, 589 learners were oriented on kitchen gardening 130 people were examined in camp by the Ministry of Population, Government of the Pakistan.

Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) For Emergency and Disaster Right to information desk/complaints Linkages with Bunyad Micro-Finance Orientation on livestock for livelihood. kitchen gardening sessions for food security. Dengue awareness for preventive measures

Confidence improved, women saw that their girls/children go regularly to schools, help with their home work. Go regularly to medical center Less children More voting involvement, small business. Increased enrolment and improved retention. Reading habits promoted through Mobile Rickshaw Libraries. Increased vision (nutrition, CNICs and against early child marriages etc).

Bunyad Literacy Community Council Way to Social Development BUNYAD formed & registered in 1994, and literate more than 10 Million Bunyad’s key Working Areas Adult female Literacy Mobile Phone Based Literacy Functional Literacy Non-Formal Primary/Basic Education for out of school children. Expansion of enrolment & retention of students in schools. Adopt A School Programme (Formal) Reducing child labour through NFE approach Community Learning Centers (CLC’s) Training of Non-Formal and Formal Education Teachers. Women’s Empowerment through Micro-Credit Health & Water/Sanitation Reproductive Health Initiatives, Research and Publications, Child Protection, Women’s Empowerment (Advocacy) Kitchen Gardening, Livestock Development

Problem of Illiteracy Huge Indifference of Government, though Article 25A, to AE Political will missing in promoting literacy, increasing not decreasing. Turf war between education & literacy department. Resources for AE laughable. Many actors (NCHD, BECS, Literacy Department), no result. No Networking The gap of the rural & urban is widening, education in rural areas is far behind the urban. Distant schools/villages--- internet service poor for e-learning

Future of Women Communities want their girls & women to learn. Women more in numbers in Higher Learning, more in universities. In decision making, big change in urban girls Picture women police on Motor Cycle (case of Aliya)

The challenge… is accepted by Bunyad, will take KNCU case to Scale
