Controlled Assessment revision and memorising techniques Learning to learn…

Learning successfully comes from knowing yourself and knowing how you memorise best! If you have techniques that have proved to work for you, then use them! If you are not sure how to proceed, here are some ideas!

First, having your paragraph typed up or copied cleanly might help you get started, a messy preparation might put you off and lead to you learning mistakes

Kineasthetic learners? (learn by doing things) Use cards! Design cards with questions on 1 side and key words from the answer on the other side. Re ‐ write a paragraph, chop it up then piece back together correctly.

Kinaesthetic/auditory (learn by listening) Ask a friend/family member to quiz you! Walk around the room as you learn it saying it out loud as you go!

Auditory learners? Record your presentation (you can use school digital recorders or your phone ) and put your recording on your pod/computer… Listen to it on your way to school, before going to bed… Turn it into a song! (worked particularly well for one guitar ‐ playing y11!)

Kinaesthetic and visual? (learn by watching, seeing things) Copy the 1st sentence from your paragraph on paper, try and remember it, fold over and try to write/ say it from memory. If you are successful, move on to sentence 1 + 2, if not, try again until you get it right! Place key words/ short phrases on post ‐ it notes around the house ‐ each time you see one, try to recall the whole sentence or paragraph.

Visual learners? Draw pictures to represent the meaning of your sentences and try to remember your sentences using them. Copy / type out your paragraphs on big pieces of paper and put them on your bedroom walls, in the bathroom, on the fridge… anywhere you spend time at home, being constantly in front of it will help you get it in your head!

Use highlighters/ colouring pens to illuminate key words or phrases that you find particularly challenging.

Other techniques : 1st letters: Write the 1st letter of each word in the sentence and try to remember the sentence using them e.g.: J’adore les fruits, c’est délicieux = J’A L F, C’E D Or, try using one in 3 or 4 words, then fill in the gaps from memory. e.g. J’adore …………. ………………. c’est ……………… ………. bon …………. ………santé. (= J’adore les fruits, c’est délicieux et bon pour la santé)

General tips : LITTLE BUT OFTEN ! When revising, never spend longer than about ½ hour at once on your work ‐ your brain will shut down! PLAN YOUR REVISION and don’t leave it all until the last minute. Begin in the middle or at the end! At different sessions, choose different starting points for your revision. If you always begin with the 1st paragraph, this will be brilliant but you may not learn the rest of the work so thoroughly.

For SPEAKING CA, you are marked for pronunciation and intonation ‐ Make sure you know how to say each word correctly. When you speak, make it clear where each sentence ends and a new one begins.
