DISCO The #1 genre of music most associated with the 70s First appeared in dance clubs Uses a driving beat & stringed instruments The movie Saturday Night Fever (1977), starring John Travolta & featuring the music of the Bee Gees, single-handedly started a “disco mania” across the USA

The Bee Gees & The Village People The Village People, from USA Their name is based on Greenwich Village, New York Known for their on-stage costumes depicting American stereotypes (a Native American, a soldier, a construction worker, a cowboy, & a biker) Best hits: “Y.M.C.A,” “In the Navy,” “Macho Man” Bee Gees, from England 3 Brothers: Berry, Robin, & Maurice Gibb Sang in 3-part harmony Signature sound: Berry’s falsetto voice (high register), & Robin’s vibrato (voice shakes) Their music was featured on the Saturday Night Fever movie, which started the disco craze. #1 hit: “Stayin’ Alive”

Gloria Gaynor (1949-present) Nicknamed: Disco Diva, Queen of Disco From New Jersey Always wanted to sing, but went to beauty school to have “something to fall back on” Made it big—recorded 3 discos songs back to back ("Honey Bee", "Never Can Say Goodbye" and "Reach Out, I'll Be There) with no breaks. It became a 19 minute dance marathon, played at all the clubs. #1 hit: “I Will Survive” Originally on the B-side of the record b/c it wasn’t “radio friendly.” This song symbolized the female strength. Unique because she has no background vocals, and her voice was not altered at all. Grammy Award: Best Disco Recording

The End of Disco Disco clubs became associated with drug use & promiscuity Disco flooded the airways. People got sick of it! “Disco Demolition Night” –stunt by a Chicago DJ at a July 12, 1979 baseball game (Chicago White Sox & Detroit Tigers—held in Chicago). – $.98 to bring your old disco record – A crate filled with disco records was blown up on the field – Planned for 20,000 attendees. Instead, tens of thousands attended! – The fans were there to see the explosion, not the game. They stormed the field and caused a riot. – Some of them threw their records like frisbees from the stands. – The White Sox were forced to forfeit the game. One of the last disco songs was “Funkytown” by Lipps Inc.

Reggae Reggae is a genre of music from Jamaica. It combines Jamaican music with R&B (which they learned from Miami & New Orleans radio stations). Reggae has a heavy back-beat on beats 2 & 4. Its lyrics often reflect the beliefs & traditions of Rastafarianism. Lyrics also incorporate a lot of Jamaican slang. Many believe that Reggae is the predecessor to hip hop and rap. Best Reggae artist of all time: Bob Marley.

Bob Marley Born Robert Nesta Marley (nickname “Bob Marley”). 1945 in Saint Ann, Jamaica. Father—white Englishman, Mother— black Jamaican. Father died. Moved to Kensington, where he met his friend Bunny Wailer. Together they learned to play music. Dropped out of school—age 14 to study welding. Started a group called “Bob Marley & The Wailers.” Included him, Bunny Wailer, and Peter Tosh After marriage, he converted to a new religion called Rastafarian. This was when he began growing his signature dreadlocks to show his devout faith. – Premise: European colonization was bad. As long as black remained outside of Africa, they would have the “slave mentality.” It encouraged black to return to Africa in order to be truly “free.” This religion also required ritual smoking (Ganja). By smoking, they believed it brought them closer to God, and made their minds more open-minded to receive His spirit. Even though his group broke up, Bob Marley continued to tour. His first big hit was “No Woman, No Cry.” (1975) He spent most of the 70s trying to promote peace & cultural understanding for Jamaica—despite being shot (along with his wife and manager, who also survived). Was revered as a prophet, a cultural, and political figurehead. Died of cancer (found on his toe, and spread) in 1981. Wanted to die in Jamaica, but died in Miami, FL. Best songs: – ONE LOVE (This song is Marley's call for mankind to unify and respect one another. He sings the familiar lyric, "Let's get together and feel all right) – BUFFALO SOLDIER. (Political song: It tells the story of Africans enslaved by the United States after the Civil War and forced to go to battle against Native Americans. Sample lyrics: "Buffalo Soldier, in the heart of America, stolen from Africa, brought to America, fighting on arrival, fighting for survival.“ – NO WOMAN, NO CRY - This song begins, "Cause I remember when we used to sit in the government yard in Trenchtown," which refers to the extremely poor area of Kingston, Jamaica, where Marley moved with his mother and lived for many years. – GET UP, STAND UP.

Pop (the Jackson Five) The Jackson 5 (actually 6 children, the youngest was not allowed to sing) Members: Michael Jackson (lead vocals), Tito, Jermaine, Jackie, Marlon From Gary, Indiana Genre: Pop, Motown Helped develop the solo careers of Michael Jackson, and sister Janet Jackson Best hits: “ABC,” “Rockin’ Robin,” “I Want you Back,” “I’ll Be There” Sold 100 million records worldwide, and had 4 #1 hits in a row The group has never formally broken up – All brothers performed together at the Michael Jackson tribute in 2001. – Michael died in 2009 of a heart attack – Later toured again in 2012

Hip Hop (Rapper’s Delight) Group—Sugarhill Gang: “Rapper’s delight” –first known rap hit (1979) While it was not the first to feature rapping, it was the first hit that caused the hip-hop genre to spread across the US & around the world Reached #36 on the Billboard charts Black DJs would take loops from funk/soul music and repeat it over and over again at dance parties. Eventually they composed groups of rhyming words over the music This song was recorded in 1 session, and in 1 take. It is originally 14 min 37 sec long. Hip hop now appealed to new, wider audience. Paved the way for rap to develop in 80s.
