Today Is… 25 October 2012 Draw a KWL chart on pg. 39 of your notebook. (It can take up most of the page) Agenda 1.Europe KWL Chart 2.Introduction to Europe 3.Start on Europe maps SWBAT Describe where Europe is located, what makes the continent unique, and why it’s a favorable place to live. What I KnowWhat I Want to KnowWhat I Learned Fill in anything you know about Europe, no matter how simple it seems. Come up with at least 3 questions you have about Europe.

Show Europe on Google Earth & use these questions as a discussion: How big are the countries? What color is the land on the satellite photos? What does that tell us? What kind of climate do you think most of Europe has? (Pay attention to latitude!) Any major physical features? (Mountains, rivers, etc.) Surrounded by a lot of water---What 2 oceans? What two other continents are closest to Europe?---How do you think this affects the continent? In which areas do you think most Europeans live? Tell the students Google Earth is available for free download on their computers, ipods, ipads, phones, etc.

Where is Europe located? Which hemispheres? Northern, mostly eastern, but a little in western hemisphere too Touches two oceans Arctic & Atlantic Surrounded by seas as well Mediterranean, Black, Caspian, etc.

Connected to another continent (Asia) Russia split between both continents Contains lots of islands British Isles, Iceland, etc. 2 nd highest population If it’s the 6 th largest continent and has the 2 nd highest population, what does that mean? High population density EuropeNorth America Population 739,165,030528,720,588 Pop Density 18847 What are some possible reasons that Europe has a higher population density than North America?

What are some things that make Europe unique? Highly urbanized What does that mean? Lots of historic cities People have been living in Europe for tens of thousands of years Some of the most powerful countries in the world Based on $, influence on politics, military strength, nuclear power, population, UN status, etc. U.S., China, Russia, France, United Kingdom, India, Japan, Germany, Brazil, Italy Notice that 5 of them are in Europe

Near lots of water Lots of arable land (1/3 of the continent) with fertile soil Northern forest provides timber resources Mild climate (North Atlantic Drift/Current) Lots of large rivers (transportation and trade) Beautiful coasts & mountains
