Causes: Communication Entrepreneurship Predecessors
23
Communication “When I made Facebook two years ago my goal was to help people understand what was going on in their world a little better. I wanted to create an environment where people could share whatever information they wanted, but also have control over whom they shared that information with.” Create connections between people 7
24
Entrepreneurship Built facemash “for fun” Zuckerberg enjoyed creating things Did not see Facebook as a means to become wealthy 7
25
Predecessors The idea of a social networking sight was not original: Ex. Myspace
26
Why Facebook > Myspace Overall Site Design & Organization Profiles Customization Pictures & Partnership with Flickr Music and Videos Sharing Communication Promoting Groups Relationship Statuses Co-Workers Finding Old Friends 9
27
Impacts Positive Communication Reconnection Marketing Negative Distraction Cyber-bullying Privacy: Identity Theft Social Problems?
28
Communication/Reconnection Facebook allows reconnection with old family and friends Frances Simpson and father Tony Simpson Reconnected after 50 years through Facebook Facebook is global: relationships can reach across the world Exception: China blocks Facebook, but has their own imitation website called Renren 10, 3
29
Cyber-Bullying/Privacy Easy to create an account and impersonate another person Anonymously bully others August 21, 2009, Keeley Houghton of Malvern, Worcestershire Became first person in Britain to be sentenced for actions on social networking site Groups can be created for any cause: Anti-Holocaust groups provoke controversy 4
30
Studies have shown… Kids spend increasingly long periods of time on Facebook Distraction from academics and family life Kids can become unhappy/jealous due to exposure to lives of peers Edinburgh Napier University: Facebook = stress Fear of missing out on information, fear of offending “friends” Leads to changing definition of “friends” 4, 5
31
So how does Facebook connect to the pre-21 st century?
32
Decline of Written Communication There has been a steady decline in physical communication: 50% email 29% text 13% pencil and paper For ages 15-24, only 5% communicate with pencil and paper This represents a gradual depersonalization of communication A different type of communication that is not based on physical contact is being established 11
