 The Reader holds up to 160 eBooks at one time and hundreds more with the optional memory stick ports. Its portable size makes it the perfect travel companion, allowing you to read a variety of books whenever, and wherever you want. There are thousands of eBook titles available now at Waterstones UK, Reader also allows you to view other document formats such as Adobe® PDF10, RTF, TXT, BBeB® and Microsoft® Word. It has a long battery life that lasts up to 7,500 continuous page turns, and it's even easy to read in sunlight thanks to the amazing paper-like screen eInk® technology.memory stickeBook titlesWaterstones UKMicrosoft® WordeInk®  Slim and compact, the Sony reader lets you store and take numerous books with you wherever you go. It’s as simple and absorbing as reading a real paper book, but a great deal lighter! The Sony Reader also benefits the environment by reducing the need for paper books.  The new Reader will retail for about $300 and come complete with a USB cable; eBook Library PC companion software; and a color- coordinated, protective soft cover.

 As technology continues to progress and eReaders begin to expand into new areas, the competition between the various competing brands has also heated up. The potential for eReaders to see broad use in the business and educational sectors with their ability to instantly update data and send it anywhere in the world, and the increased applications for personal use, such as newspaper and RSS feeds in addition to their capability to house a large library of books, play MP3 and other audio files, and much more, all serve to make their potential market expansion limitless.

 There are four major contenders in this review vying for the crown right now, the Sony eReader, the iRex iLiad, the Amazon Kindle and the BEBOOK.  Ebooks as a green alternative to paper books. This makes sense because: No paper is used to produce the copies, which includes the massive water and power usage needed for paper production and then for the printing. No physical shipping is necessary, which means no gas/diesel use.

 It's priceless to have a fully functioning environment. The amount of tree mass used to produce all books/papers in the whole world is astounding. One often nails the debate of sustainability onto vehicles (which IS a problem), but fails to forget that all parts of the consumption chain are responsible. Just think of all the millions of books printed, and then just discarded. Given enough time, I think the technology will ease the monetary costs of producing eBooks.

 Price not being an issue, since most e-books are the same or cheaper than their printed cousins for current releases, the environmental impact of reducing the need for paper could be huge.  How "List Prices" work with the publishers – it's a bit of a tricky business. For example, when a new hardcover comes out, most are roughly $25-$30. Each major publisher has a different strategy for discounting the list price to Sony Connect.  Sony gives a portion of the sale back to the publisher, and 20% back to the consumer to try and keep the price down as much as possible and make a business. But until the publishers get their list prices down further, there's not going to be any significant changes in e-book pricing from a retailer to the consumer.  Here are some examples: * State of Denial by Bob Woodward (Simon & Schuster). Print List = $30. eBook List = $16.99 (45% discount). Sony Connect Price = $13.59. * The Mission Song by John Le Carre (Hachette – formerly Time Warner). Print List=$26.99. eBook List=$17.99 (33% discount). Sony Connect Price = $14.39.

Then there are other major publishers like Penguin and Holtzbrinck who do not discount at all between their print and e-book list prices. Over time, as the e-book market heats up, hopefully there will be some more competition for customers that will move other publishers towards and beyond the more aggressive e-book pricing discounts.
