Background Liberty University – Founded in 1971 – Began distance education in 1985 – Largest private, non-profit online educator in the U.S. – Over 450 degree programs (250 online) from certificate to doctoral level

Background Jerry Falwell Library – E-book PDA pilot with ebrary in 2010 40,000 titles across disciplines – PDA became permanent program in fall 2010 – E-books librarian hired spring 2011 – Major weeding project in summer 2011 Reduced pool to 15,000 titles – Various management approaches beginning fall 2012

Program Goals Meet information resource needs of growing number of online programs and students while maintaining costs Satisfy accreditation standards – adequacy, sufficiency, comparability Fulfill institutional strategic plan objectives

Methods Optimization formula – Data-driven selection based on historic use data – Percentile ranks assigned to potential additions by LC class rounded down to the nearest hundred, e.g. BS 1500. – Titles receiving rank of ≥75% or 0% selected – Further refined by publisher and date – Implemented fall 2012

Methods Extended Access – Turnaway prevention feature which automatically upgrades access within set parameters: Maximum price of $200 Upgrade to next available license type, preferably MUPO Purchase up to 3 additional SUPOs – Piloted in November 2012 with $25,000 – Funds depleted by February 2013

Methods Selection schedule – Provide current, curriculum-relevant content – Quarterly adds (July, October, January, April) – Annual weed Titles unused after 18 months – Adopted summer 2013 – Not yet fully implemented because of technical processing issues, staffing, and budget

Methods Short-term loans (STLs) – Specific goals – Parameters: Loan in one-day increments Loan 3 times (4th use triggers purchase) – Pilot beginning in September 2013 – Permanent acquisitions methods beginning FY15
