MBChB Selection What makes a good doctor? GMC 2011

MBChB Selection The selection system takes a look at: Academic criteria Better of GCSE or AS results (if ‘cashed-in’) A levels (or equivalent) BMAT Non-academic criteria Personal statement Interview

MBChB Selection 3750 + UCAS receivedTriaged for minimum criteria Academic scoring + BMAT Non-academic attributes from the personal statement Top 1000 forms Scored 2 assessors 3 rd assessor if difference Better of (GSCE or declared AS) + A2 + Aptitude Test VERY few rejected Minimum criteria well advertised

Academic Criteria GCSE At least 6 grade Bs must be offered including: English Maths Dual Science/Double Science, or Chemistry and Biology IGCSE English curricula vary Admissions policy has full details For school leavers predicted 3 As, 40% had perfect academic scoring last year i.e. 9 A* at GSCE or 3 As at AS

Academic Criteria AS-level Three AS-levels. Same subject restrictions as A-levels. We look at your best 3 AS-levels if declared “cashed in” after the first year of study. We do NOT accept undeclared AS-levels or AS-levels cashed-in later, nor do we regard A-level results as equivalent. If the total is higher than your GCSE total, we will use your AS score We use either your GCSE score OR your AS score – you can’t add one declared AS to 8 GCSEs. If your school doesn’t declare AS levels, we will use your GCSE score. We do NOT accept module scores or predicted or undeclared grades.

Academic Criteria A-level Three A-levels – no advantage to having 4 Chemistry at Grade A is mandatory General Studies, Critical Thinking and the Extended Project are not used in academic scoring No Chemistry with Biology and Human Biology No Chemistry with Maths and Further Maths Standard offer is AAA – no advantage to A* Predicted/achieved treated equally

MBChB Selection

Aptitude Test Between 2008 and 2013, we used UKCAT For anyone applying after January 1 st 2014, we will be asking for BMAT No alternatives will be accepted UKCAT will not be accepted as a substitute

Aptitude testing A score based on BMAT performance will be combined with a score based on GCSE/AS/A2 performance or prediction A high academic score can help compensate for a low BMAT score and vice versa There will not be a pre-determined “cut-off” score

BMAT Subject specific admissions test for applicants to medicine, veterinary medicine 2 hour pen and paper test, local centers 3 sections test of skills and knowledge that you are already expected to have – Aptitude and skills – Scientific knowledge and application – Writing task
