3 What does reading mean to you? Why is reading so important for children?

4  To share with you how we teach reading in school.  To show you how you can support your child’s reading development at home.  To support you in helping your child with spelling  To launch our new Reading Journals

5  Books help children develop vital language skills.  Reading can open up new worlds and enrich children's lives.  Reading can enhance children's social skills.  Reading can improve hand-eye coordination.  Reading is fun

8 Why should you support reading at home? Parents, carers and families have a vital role to play in helping their children achieve their full potential. (Department for Education) Parents can improve their children’s academic performance by the equivalent of up to six months’ schooling by reading together, singing songs and even sharing family meals. (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) There is ample evidence that parents who promote reading as a valuable and worthwhile activity have children who are motivated to read for pleasure. (Literacy Trust)

18  In school we have Spelling tests in every year group. Strategies for supporting children to learn their spellings: Look, Cover, Say, Write, Check Video clip of learning spellings here
