12 Agriculture An interdisciplinary curriculum of issues, topics and challenges pertinent to agriculture in its broadest sense Use of field experiences to investigate and research topics related to environmental impact, resource management, biotechnology, political/economic implications of domestic and international trade and the nature and structures of support systems within agribusiness Field based research using innovative equipment, laboratories and field sites Small group and individual investigations

13 Langley Research Center *****must be 16 years old***** *must have access to a personal computer during Governor’s School Mentored by a NASA scientist or engineer in one of the following areas: Aeronautical Engineering Mechanical Engineering Electrical Engineering Computer Science-Advanced Materials Science NASA/NIA Mentorship

14 Marine Science—VIMS Mentorship Works closely with small team of graduate students & technicians Assigned to a specific project Biological, Chemical, Geological & physical oceanography Wetlands Ecology Fisheries Science Coastal Law Marine Resource Management & advisory services 6 students *must have access to a personal computer during Governor’s School

15 Essay (assigned topic; 300-500 words, 2 pages, double spaced, 12 point font) Essay topic depends on the program Top 10% of class OR 90 th percentile & above on standardized tests (PSAT, SAT, Stanford…) Academic Governor’s School Criteria AND

17 Remember the Date October 15-December 12—Obtain application documents & guidelines December 5—Last day to submit Intent to Apply to Mr. Cavendar in Room 1805 or you may also indicate your intent by emailing him at cavendcm@pwcs.edu cavendcm@pwcs.edu December 12—Request teachers recommendations by this date. Submit the teacher request sheet to Mr, Cavendar (this lets him know which teachers you asked). December TBD—“After-School Workshops” for students to work on applications and to have applications questions answered.

18 Remember the Date January 5—Academic applications DUE. Academic teacher recommendations DUE. January TBD—Testing (as needed). You will be notified if testing is necessary. February—County notification of application status (The county can send 25 Agriculture & 50 other academic applications) April—State notification of application status
