1
IEEE History & Role in Advancement of Data Communications By Josiah Fink
2
Origins Created from the merge of 2 competing organizations in 1963
3
AIEE AIEE Headquarters New York City American Institute of Electrical Engineers 1884 Established to represent U.S. at the International Electrical Exposition that the Franklin institute was hosting in Philadelphia
4
AIEE (continued) Focused on electricity and transmissions that used hard lines Took little notice to radio emergence in early 1900’s Borrowed first standards for wire gauge from Europe and then set their own standards for all newly emerging technology
5
AIEE (continued) Published their first journal from papers that were presented at convention Norvin Greene (first president) Thomas Edison and Alexander Gram Bell (early members)
6
AIEE decline When radio emerged, the AIEE did not cater to this new technology Those interested in advanced went newly formed IRE to get literature and standards Two societies became very competitive
7
IRE IRE Headquarter, New York City early 1900’s a man by the name of Guglielmo Marconi was experimenting with the wireless telegraph 1912 Institute of Radio Engineers formed
8
IRE (continued) Serviced members with journals and information about wireless communications As radio use rapid expansion from a handful in 1920 to fourteen million by 1930 in the U.S. the society grew quickly
9
IRE (continued) Not only was radio useful by private civilians, it was also adopted by the armed forces to help troops and ships communicate Overtook AIEE as larger group by 1956
10
Merger Because of competitiveness and blending of fields the two companies merged in 1963 Formed what is known as the IEEE (Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers)
11
IEEE Now one, the IEEE set a goal to “advance innovation and technological excellence for the benefit of humanity” Rapid growth and spreading around the world as technology became more important and widespread
12
IEEE Growth
13
IEEE today Currently encompasses members from 160 countries
14
IEEE Today Most widely recognized today for their role in computer standards Currently have more than 900 active standards Offer online development courses
15
IEEE today Currently worlds largest technological society Has around 375,000 members around the world
16
IEEE Today Members in Global Workforce Industry 40.7% Academia 28.9% Government 10.3% Self-employed 3.4% Retired 5.3% Unemployed 5.1% - More than 50% of organization members in U.S.
17
Have journals and conferences to further field (one of largest roles) Set standards for many technologies
18
Process of Creating a Standard Request submitted Work group organized of government and industrial employees Standards drafted & reviewed Final approval Implementation Revise if needed
19
IEEE sets Standards for electric power energy biomedical technology and healthcare information technology information assurance telecommunications consumer electronics transportation aerospace nanotechnology
20
Examples -Format of credit cards -Size of railroad tracks -Electrical lines -Wifi protocols
21
Why Follow IEEE Standards Having a network or hardware piece that complies with the IEEE standards will make your work easier. Good operation results, maximum compatibility with any other IEEE compliant parts and no radio interferences are also advantages. availability of technical support whenever needed, because every network specialist needs to have good knowledge of the IEEE standards. Risk alienating customers
22
IEEE Benefits for Companies Benefits all companies because allows products to interact well and have interchangeable parts Gives companies a global market for products Gives guidelines & ensures quality Aids in security of networks
23
IEEE Benefits For Consumers Interchangeable parts Global competition (lowers cost) Simplifies setup of equipment New technologies backward compatible Aids in security of networks
24
IEEE The Future IEEE P2200: it will enable the delivery of rich media content such as high-definition or 3D video, games, music, books, and magazines to portable devices This will effect content owners, distribution services, storage device manufacturers, mobile and desktop operating system vendors, chipset vendors, entertainment device manufacturers, and security/DRM providers.
25
IEEE The Future (continued) Terabit networks - 100 times the speed of current networks - handle more complex data - automated contingency configurations to protect against failures
26
IEEE Conclusion The IEEE has played a key role in the advancement of technology and with it’s proactive approach, it is likely it will be influential long into the future
