MARKO ZOVKO, ACCOUNT MANAGER STEPHEN SMITH, SOLUTIONS SPECIALIST JOURNALS & HIGHLY-CITED DATA IN INCITES V. OLD JOURNAL CITATION REPORTS. WHAT MORE AM I GETTING?

The NEW Journal Citation Reports

SCIE & SSCI

1. SEE BOTH JCR EDITIONS TOGETHER 4 I am doing an overall review of the University Library’s journal subscriptions across all subjects, so I need to be able to interrogate both the Science Citation Index Extended (SCIE) and the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) data at the same time. I can’t do that in the old version of JCR.

OLD JCR – ONE OR THE OTHER JHCD – ONE OR THE OTHER – OR BOTH TOGETHER

2. SEE HISTORIC PERFORMANCE 7 I want to look at a fuller history of a journal’s performance – back 20 years sometimes. Is it becoming more, or less relevant? I can’t do that in the old version of JCR.

Old JCR – current year only JHCD – Data back to 1997 where available, all metrics

3. COMPARE, EXPORT, DISCUSS 10 My journals budget is decreasing. I need to compare the performance of 3 marketing journals, then export a graph to use in discussions with colleagues to help us decide which to keep and which to cancel. I can’t export from the old JCR.

Old JCR – no exporting JHCD – choose your format and export

4. OPEN ACCESS AND ADVANCED FILTERS 13 We had the meeting, and we decided to look for Open Access alternatives of similar quality. Wouldn’t it be good to be able to filter by Open Access status, and Quartile 1 journals in Business? Can’t do any of that in old JCR.

Old JCR – limited filtering JHCD – OA status, Quartile filter

5. BUILDING AND SAVING FILTERS 16 I’m much busier than I used to be. I don’t have time to keep entering the same journal names and selecting the same filters every time I need to check journal performance in my subject area. It would be great if I could save my marked lists. Not possible in old JCR.

Old JCR No possibility of saving from one session to the next (marked list only) JHCD

6. CUSTOMISE INDICATORS 19 I’m not so interested in the Immediacy Index or Cited Half-Life. We only use the Impact Factor and Eigenfactor to judge journal performance. I want to customise the indicators that I see on the screen. But I can’t...

Old JCR – set indicators JHCD – choose from wider range of indicators, and customise

7. DATA IN WoS, AND LINK FROM WoS 22 We use WoS a lot across the institution. Sometimes researchers like to use JCR too. But when they click on the journal info links in the WoS record, they only see the last 5 years’ IFs, and the link only takes them to the latest year’s JCR. Would be great to see ranking info in WoS, and then go to the full journal profile with all data for all years and all metrics in a single click...

` Old JCR 5 years of Impact Factors within WoS record Link takes you to the most recent JCR year of that journal JHCD

Old JCR 5 years of Impact Factors within WoS record Link takes you to the most recent JCR year of that journal JHCD

8. TRANSPARENCY OF JCR DATA 26 I’d really like to examine exactly what Thomson Reuters is calling a “citable item” in this journal. Perhaps even with links to the record as it appears in WoS. I can see the numbers, but can’t see the articles and reviews themselves in the old JCR.

Old JCR – transparency, but just the numbers JHCD – drill right down to the articles and reviews

InCites: Journal Citation Reports … still on legacy Journal Citation Reports? JCR on InCites Offers... Access to More Data Than Ever All users have access to all years of data from 1997 to the present All users have access to both Science & Social Science Editions Increased Transparency Calculations for all metrics revealed at the click of a button Document list provided for citable items from 2012 to present Improved User Experience In-product comparison & reporting tool Customizable journal lists & data grids Interactive visualizations Easy downloads 28

Bibliometrics ranking tool Compilation of science performance statistics and science trends data derived from Web of Science Core Collection data Identify top journals or fields or institutions in specific disciplines as well as trends and emerging areas of research –What is ‘hot’ in my discipline –Emergence of new trends, research fields and hot topics –Highly Cited Rankings for Countries, Institutions, Scientists, and Journals –Integration of Highly Cited and Hot Papers with the Web of Science Core Collection InCites: Essential Science Indicators

Take your reporting capabilities and data analysis to the next level with a more thorough understanding and the ability to present research information in a clear, concise and visually stimulating way. –Highly Cited Rankings for Countries, Institutions, Scientists, and Journals Based on citation performance from the past 10 years Highly Cited Papers = Top 1% in one of 22 broad disciplines (publications from past 10 years) Hot Papers = Top 0.1% in one of 22 broad disciplines (publications from past 2 years + citation activity in the last 2 months) –Improved visualizations of reports, baselines, rankings and graphs –“Hot” and “Highly Cited” article integration with Web of Science Core Collection

Top Performance Indicators (ESI) A class of selected indicators measuring scientific excellence and top performance which can be used to benchmark research performance against field baselines worldwide. 35 1.When paper A and B are “co-cited” by paper P, A and B are likely to have topical similarity. 2.When co-citation is frequent, it forms a group of papers that are topically associated to one another. A P B A B C Co-Citation Analysis Co-Citation Analysis and Clustering: How Does It Work? Counting the number of times that a given pair of documents (or authors or journals) are co-cited. The more papers that co-cite the pair, the stronger the relationship. This relationship is dynamic (new papers may be published which cite the pair) and forward looking. Henry Small, “Co-Citation in the Scientific Literature: A New Measure of the Relationship Between Two Documents,” Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 24(4): 265-69, July/August 1973

A B C are highly cited and influential papers that have left a mark in their field A B C Co-citing papers reveal the uptake of data, techniques and concepts revealed in the Core Papers The name of the Research Fronts comes from a summarization of the titles of the citing papers Research Fronts (ESI) Top Five Research Fronts in Space Science Clusters of papers belonging to the 1% most highly cited papers that are frequently cited together; A Research Front is formed. Research Fronts consist of a group of highly cited Core Papers and a set of Citing Papers that frequently cite the Core Papers Research fronts are drivers of innovation and scientific discovery in their fields
