Hearing Loss/Deafness Intro to Special Education Exceptionality Research Project EDU 105 Professor Davis Spring 2014 Batman

Can You Hear Me Now? There is a wide gap of variations of hearing loss and sometimes is just a case of hearing everything quieter or a complete lack of hearing The severity of the loss of hearing influences the special accommodations that must be made for the individual

Definite it IDEA! Deafness means a hearing impairment that is so severe that the child is impaired in processing linguistic information through hearing, with or without amplification that adversely affects a child's educational performance

As We Look Back… As old as any disability, there is no known beginning of deafness People’s views towards the deaf have significantly changed – In early times the deaf were thought to be unable to be taught and were a sign of disfavor with God – Later, in the 18 th century people began to open schools and form sign languages Charles Michel de L’Eppe opened the first school for the deaf Alexander Graham Bell used his money to form a school, Volta Bureau

Looking at the Diagnostics Audiologists can diagnose someone as deaf and instruct them on how to proceed with the knowledge – Visual reinforcement audiometry – play audiometry There are many remedies for the deaf – Hearing aids, cochlear implant, sign language, etc

Accommodations for Education Deaf students will often be in their own classes because then only one full time signer is necessary in order to communicate with all of the students Amplification and signers are the common tools used to accommodate the deaf both in the classroom and out

It’s the Law As an accommodation under IDEA, deaf children have rights to early intervention as well as public school resources through age 21 Law cases – Board of Education v. Rowley – Lachman v. Illinois St. Bd. of Educ – National Association of the Deaf (NAD) v. Creighton University
