Matter Is everything around you Atoms and molecules are all composed of matter Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space

Elements Pure substance (only one type of atom) 118 of them-all listed on the periodic table Example: “B” boron or “Pt” Platinum

Compounds Two or more different elements joined together All compounds are Molecules Example: H 2 O or CO 2

Mixture Elements and/or compounds sharing the same space but not joined together Can have atoms and/or molecules Example: Air

Atom the smallest component of an element having the chemical properties of the element

Molecule Two or more elements joined together Not all molecules are compounds Examples: H 2 O CO 2 O 2 NaCl N 2
