Covalent Compound can also be known as a Molecule Molecule: a neutral group of atoms held together by covalent bonds (electrons are shared within a molecule)

Steps to Write Formulas for Covalent Molecules: 1. Write the symbol for each nonmetal 2. Indicate the number of atoms of the elements by writing subscripts (besides the number 1, which is already implied by writing the element symbol)

Rules for Naming Covalent Compounds 1. The first element in the formula (least electronegative) is named first and the full element name is used. 2. The second element is named with (- ide) ending 3. Prefixes are used to show the numbers of atoms present 4. The prefix mono- is never used for naming the first element.
