23 Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, 24 but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 9:23–24 (ESV) Yada, Yada, Yada
2
God says that there is something worth bragging about. It is NOT Bank account Position in life Education degree
3
God says that there is only one thing worth bragging about Do you know Him? Can we brag about everything else?
4
“If God is the all-consuming, all powerful, all knowing, loving, and infinite Creator, sustainer, and redeemer of this universe, then nothing else we can do matters quite as much as getting to know Him and to know Him well.” Tony Evans
5
I.In order to know God, there are three decisions that we have to make
6
LET GOD BE GOD Sounds pretty basic We have a tendency to box God in, to trim him down to fit our thinking of who God is I don’t want a God who is my size. I want a God who is bigger than me and bigger than my problems
7
Jeremiah 32:17 (ESV) Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.
8
I want a God who can handle my problems Answer my prayers Lift me up when I’ve fallen I want a God who can save my soul. I want a God worth bragging about This is my God
9
Psalm 46 (ESV) 10 “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” 1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
10
PRACTICE God’s PRESENCE It’s one thing to say that God is everywhere It’s quite another to realize that you are His child He’s with you everywhere you go.
11
Psalm 139:7–10 (ESV) 7 Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! 9 If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 10 even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.
12
DETERMINE TO LIVE A HOLY LIFE 1 Peter 1:16 (ESV) … “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” Do you want to be a self-made man? Do you want to be a God made man? I want to be a new creation in Christ Jesus
13
Romans 12:2 (ESV) Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. The more we know God the more we will know ourselves
14
People always trying to find out who they are Can’t know that until you come face to face with God If you don’t want to know the truth, don’t pursue God God calls it as He sees it (as it really is) In Isaiah 6, Isaiah saw the glory of God ROM 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” God doesn’t leave you where you are
15
II. BOAST NOT 1 Corinthians 1:18–31 Jeremiah 9:23–24 Boast—Glory in, showing pride and self-satisfaction, Used in positive ways. Wise—Comes only from God Mighty Rich
16
II.BOAST in this—Each point intensifies the other Understands God Knows God
17
"What makes life worthwhile is having a big enough objective, something which catches our imagination and lays hold of our allegiance, and this the Christian has in a way that no other person has. For what higher, more exalted, and more compelling goal can there be than to know our triune God?"
18
III.“In these things I delight” How to please God Knowing God pleases Him Knowledge does not please God Wisdom, strength, riches do not please God
19
IV.Yada, Yada, Yada Know Hebrew word Knowledge is related to action and wisdom
20
The Creator of everything and everyone has this perspective on bragging rights… When you understand how incomparable your Creator is and then realize how your knowledge, talents and wealth are but gifts from his limitless storehouse, then and only then will you discover how few bragging rights you really have.
21
V.Do you Know God and His Son, Jesus? Philippians 3:3–11 (ESV) …8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
