1 Belt regions of the United States The belt regions of the United States are portions of the country that share certain characteristics. The "belt" terminology was first applied to regions for various crops because they have similar climates as often follow lines of latitude. The usage has expanded to other climatic, economic, and cultural concentrations. !! THESE REGIONS ARE NOT FORMALLY DEFINED; THEY FREQUENTLY OVERLAP AND HAVE VAGUE BORDERS. The terminology is also used outside the U.S. (e.g., India's Hindi Belt).

5 Belt regions of the United States Borscht Belt The name comes from, BORSCHT a soup that is popular in many Central and Eastern European countries and was brought from these regions by Slavic and Jewish immigrants to the United States. The soup is of Ukrainian origin, made with beetroot as the main ingredient giving it a deep reddish-purple color.
