Case Studies TechSoup San Francisco did test installations in five locations in the Fall of 2012 in cooperation with Interconnection Three charities, and two libraries All locations found it surprisingly easy to set- up and maintain We’re considering offering it as a ‘packaged solution’ lab in a box (hardware and software, all preconfigured)

La Conner Regional Library La Conner, Washington

La Conner Regional Library 2,200 square foot building 5 public computers Town of 800 people, service area 5,000 people Four clerical staff all part time 2 servers using Windows 2008 Outsource tech services to Network Solutions out of Bellingham

The Problem in 2008 The computers took up lots of space Each one operated differently They were all over 5 years old Crashing was frequent Updating took time and money as each computer was loaded individually Looking at big money to replace them all

Thin Clients Saved Money Our 1 st thin client installation was under $5,000 to replace the desktops with thin clients Loading software and patches are done only on the server – less Tech time Client access licenses are cheaper than stand alone licenses Thin clients last longer than desktops The staff can troubleshoot them Multipoint Server is latest version installed

La Connor Regional Library Hardware Donated: Core 2 Duo desktop, 5 LCD Monitors and 4 Ncomputing U170 USB Hubs Replaced: 6 HP Thinclients connected to Windows Server Set up: Took 25 minutes Comments: Liked the small size of the hubs. Need roll back software, like Rollback RX
