4. Elkins ASL Club Purpose: to allow ASL students an opportunity to meet together, play games, and promote awareness of ASL and the Deaf community. Activities: Deaf socials at Chick-Fil-A, Silent Brunch at IHOP, Video holiday card for the Deaf co-op. Meets once a month on Wednesday afternoons. Officers meet the day before. This is a very brief example. There is a lot more to say about the other local groups than Elkins ASL Club. Be prepared to present at the end of class tomorrow. You have a test on Friday, so also be brushing up on your emotion and feelings vocabulary, as well as your storytelling techniques notes. 4

16. NTD- National Theater of the Deaf 1 st performance: 1967, 6 people performed “The Miracle Worker”, about Helen Keller- born deaf and blind. Deaf theater group, over 150 national tours; connects hearing and Deaf culture together because they sign their performances. Toured in 33 countries over 7 continents, and all 50 states. Benefits: telecommunication devices, bilingual and bicultural education and interpreters have grown because of NTD. Hearing people can be inspired by the artistry. A platform for the Deaf to share their culture with the audience. Voiced over or not? 16

17. RID- Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf To become an interpreter, you get certified through RID. Similar to BEI in Texas, but RID is on national level. Play a lead role in providing quality training for interpreters. Goals: develop rigorous standards and develop reliable, relevant exams for interpreters. Network for finding interpreters, provide educational materials to help teach interpreting, sell educational DVD’s, books, etc. Headquarters in Alexandria, VA Paid memberships gets scholarships and awards, and subscription to publication., 17

NAD- National Association of the Deaf Founded 1880 in Silver Springs, MD Donations and grants fund the program- non-profit Mission: preserve, protect and promote civil, human and logistic rights of Deaf and hard-of-hearing people in the US presents the US in the World Federation of the Deaf TXAD and NAD are similar- NAD is on US level NAD and Global LLC decided to have closed-captions on videos on airplanes Have their own LGBT for the Deaf.
