Prayer Lord, At times they seem so grown up that they do not need us anymore. Help us, as parents, to nurture and guide our children as they grow towards adulthood. When Selecting your Year 10 Course: Remember, Year 10 is the foundation to VCE/VCAL. What do you enjoy? What are you good at? What career aspirations do you have?

Year 10 Courses There are 2 Possible Year 10 Pathways: 1.Year 10 Core and Electives (Pre VCE pathway) 2. Year 10 VINCIT Additional session later this evening

Year 10 2015 The selection of a suitable course involves: Core subjects Elective subjects VCE options VINCIT How do I make the right decisions for me? Subject teachers, Domain Leaders & homeroom teachers will be able to advise Careers co-ordinator

Year 10 Core All students must study: 1.Religious Education (Religion & Society Unit 1) 2.English 3.Mathematics Students have opportunity to choose elective units within Science, Humanities, Physical Education, Art and Technology In Mathematics students do either: Maths Pre-Foundation Maths Core Maths Core Plus

Year 10 2015 Elective Subjects You must choose: At least one Science subject At least one Health & Physical Education subject At least one Humanities subject At least one Art subject At least one Technology subject

Please Note: LOTE- Italian or Indonesian Must be studied in both semesters, so counts as 2 elective choice VCE Units 1 and 2 Must be studied both semesters, so counts as 2 elective choice

Year 10 Electives When submitting your subject selections, please ensure You submit your top 8 choices and 2 reserves: Maximum of 3 units from one area Research has been done to ensure there is emphasis on preparation for future vocation & possible pre requisite studies at VCE/VCAL

Maths preparation for VCE Pre-Foundation Mathematics Pre-Foundation Mathematics leads only to Foundation Mathematics Units 1&2 at Year 11. No Year 12 Mathematics. Core Mathematics Core Mathematics leads only to General Mathematics units 1&2, followed by Further Mathematics 3&4 Core Plus Mathematics Allows flexibility in VCE Can select Mathematics Methods units 1&2 and / or General Mathematics units 1&2 Can also take the Methods/General elective Methods / General elective Allows Further Mathematics Units 3/4 to be taken in year 11 Better prepares students for Mathematics Methods units 1&2, particularly if Methods 3/4 is to be taken in Year 12

Year 9 to 10 Maths Course Selection Advice Investigate your careers of interest to check what the Maths pre-requisites are for the courses you might be interested in.

If you want to study: Maths Methods Advanced General Maths Specialist Maths Y ou will need to do CORE PLUS Maths at Year 10. You should only consider doing this option if your YEAR 9 RESULTS are CONSISTENTLY 70% OR ABOVE. You can only do UNIT 3 & 4 SPECIALIST MATHS if you also do UNIT 3 & 4 MATHS METHODS. It is completed not recommended you attempt Maths Methods if you have not successfully CORE PLUS Maths at Year 10

If you want to study General Maths Further Maths You can to do either CORE or CORE PLUS at Year 10. You must actually BE SUCCESSFUL at Year 10 maths to consider selecting this option for VCE.

If you want to study Foundation Maths You will need to do either CORE or PRE-FOUNDATION at Year 10. You CANNOT do any UNIT 3 & 4 MATHS if you select this option. It is not recommended you attempt General Maths if you do Pre-Foundation Maths at Year 10

Elective Subjects ENGLISH Exploring Language and Literature Preparation for VCE Literature and Language Studied in addition to mainstream English SCIENCE Year 10 SCIENCE (one semester) OR INTRODUCTORY units prepares for VCE Psychology- Mind Matters VCE Biology- Cells to Creatures VCE Physics- Newton Sparks a Star War VCE Chemistry- Chemistry in the Environment

Science Electives Option AOption BOption C Year 10 Science (one semester) AND Mind Matters (one semester) Two or three of the following: Cells to Creatures Chemistry in the Environment Newton Sparks a Star War Mind Matters (one semester each) Option A would suit students who do NOT wish to pursue a Science pathway in VCE Option B would suit students who want to study Psychology in VCE but who are unsure about other science choices Option C would suit students who are sure of which VCE science they would like to pursue in VCE

Elective Subjects HUMANITIES UNITS Geography Political Law prepares for VCE Legal Studies History prepares for VCE Revolutions Business Commerce focuses on personal and/or business budgeting and prepares for VCE Accounting, Business Management and Economics.

Elective Subjects HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION Advanced Physical Education is intended to be an introduction to VCE Physical Education (one semester or both) PE Active (one semester or both)

Elective Subjects ARTS Visual Communication and Design prepares for VCE Visual Communication and Design (one or two semesters) Art prepares for VCE Studio Arts (one or two semesters) Media Studies prepares for VCE Media Studies (one or two semesters) Drama prepares for VCE Drama (one semester only) Dance (one semester only)

Elective Subjects TECHNOLOGY Design Technology: Wood, Fibre and Food (one semester or both) prepare for VCE Design and Technology Hospitality prepares students for a career in the Hospitality industry (one semester or both) Engineering is designed to give students the introductory skills and experience that is foundation for career paths in engineering and manufacturing.

Extension- VCE Units 1 & 2 Criteria: Students must have demonstrated an excellent ability (80% or above) in a related subject, shown interest and consistent effort over a period time English results must also be of a high standard An application form must be completed and 2014 Semester One report attached All applications are reviewed CRC Melton reserves the right to reject and application if academic concerns arise or if the students year 10 program may be compromised.

Extension- VCE Units 1 & 2 If you wish to study a VCE Unit next year: Make one choice from the VCE list of subjects on offer in your Subject Selection Handbook If you are accepted for a VCE unit of study, it replaces 2 elective units. It is critical that your preference list for your Selected Units is in order of priority

Things to consider before applying: Do I meet the criteria to do a VCE unit? What are the advantages / disadvantages? Which Unit(s)? Why Year 10, not Year 11? Discuss it with subject teacher Where does my Unit 1 &2 subject fit in order of priority? English is always part of my ATAR score- should my focus be on improving my English result as opposed to extending ?

VINCIT Rationale VINCIT is a program offered at Year 10, which has a focus on supported scaffolding of skills in literacy and numeracy. VINCIT also enables students to develop knowledge and employability skills that will help prepare them for work and for participation in a broader society – family, community and lifelong learning.

Structure of VINCIT Students of VINCIT: Attend school four days a week and TAFE one day a week. Study core subjects include English, Maths, RE, Humanities and Science, each with a focus on improving skills. Have a period a cycle of study support. Participate in Karate (this is the PE component of the curriculum), where they will complete Certificate II in Sports Coaching. Complete one week of work experience in terms 1, 2 and 3. Do not participate in any electives.

VET in VINCIT Students will also have access to external VET subjects Certificate II in Sports Coaching (Karate Stream), which is compulsory for all students involved. They will participate in one week of work experience each term to enhance their work knowledge and employability skills.

VINCIT Student Expectations Students of VINCIT are expected to: Have a high standard of classroom behaviour. Willingly participate and contribute to the class. Have a preparedness to be organised and complete work to the best of their ability. Have some idea of a career pathway, as they will be completing a TAFE Certificate. Show commitment to their studies. Organise their own Work Experience placement. Submit appropriate Work Experience forms prior to the commencement of each Work Experience placement by given deadline. Participate in Karate – this is compulsory, and where the appropriate. All students will be required to follow the policies and guidelines as outlined in the student diary.
