Reciprocal Teaching: Reading Strategy Today you will be participating in a reciprocal teaching strategy. You will work in groups of four. Each one of you will be assigned a certain role within the group. Directions: You will first read the assigned Chapter(s) together as a group aloud. Then, you will take 3-5mins to complete your reciprocal teaching role card. Each card will have a number assigned to it. After completing your card, you will start with #1 and share your role with the remaining members of your group actively engaging them in discussion about the Chapter(s) you have just read. Your completed role cards will be handed in at the end of the activity.

Reciprocal Teaching Roles #1 Summarizer-the group member assigned to this role will summarize the chapter on their role card in 5 sentences or less focusing on the key events, characters and setting. #2 Question Generator-the group member assigned this role will come up with at least 2 discussion questions to ask/lead the group in a discussion with regards to ideas that were presented in the chapter. Your questions should not just be able to be answered in “yes” or “no,” but should spark further thoughts or questions from other members in your group. #3 Predictor-this group member will make a prediction(s) about future events in the book based upon evidence presented in the assigned Chapter(s). #4 Clarifier/Connector-the group member assigned this role will make at least two connections from the text to a previous experience, previous work of literature they have read, or current event. This person will also be responsible in helping students to review the text for any clarity that is necessary to answer questions or to make connections. This member should direct the group to explicit sections of text with exact page numbers when making connections or clarifying understanding.

Model “Oh, there’s lots to learn,” Fiona replied. “There’s administrative work, and the dietary rules, and punishment for disobedience. Did you know that they use a discipline want on the Old, the same as for small children? And, there’s occupational therapy, and recreational activities, and medications, and---”

Roles Modeled #1 Summarizer- While traveling together on their bicycles, Fiona and Jonas talked about Fiona’s training at the House of the Old. Although Jonas thought that she already knew how to be a successful Caretaker, she explained that there were all kinds of new things that she was learning like administrative work, the dietary needs and the discipline procedures that must be carried out just as is done with small children. She also describes therapy and medication procedures in minor detail as well. #2 Question Generator- Is it acceptable for elderly people to be punished with a discipline wand? Children? Support your answer. What types of things do you think the Old do in order to receive discipline? How do you think Fiona feels about her Assignment now that she has completed further training? Support your answer. #3 Predictor-I predict that Fiona will take on a more active role at the House of the Old and may even be forced to discipline the elders. Perhaps the next time that she and Jonas get together, they will talk more in depth about her experience with the discipline wand. Maybe Jonas will receive a memory about this and feel the pain that the Old feel. #4 Clarifier/Connector-In Nursing homes today, patients often participate in programs such as occupational therapy, recreational activities and medication. However, most people have to pay to have their family members in one of these homes. They are not just automatically given a place. Also, those who work at the places, often have to be certified nurses and they are not allowed to discipline the patients. It would be interesting to interview employees and residents in a current Nursing Home and see how they would feel about the House of the Old as described by Fiona.
