4 Definition of Reading Reading is a dynamic process in which the reader interacts with text to construct meaning. Inherent in constructing meaning is the reader’s ability to activate prior knowledge, use reading strategies, and adapt to the reading situation.

17 Questioning 1. Turn the title into a question. This becomes a major purpose for your reading. Example: How did the geography of the region affect the fertile crescent?

23 Read Actively 1. Read to search for answers to your questions. Example: The flood waters from the mountains helped to the build farm, which allowed a society to develop. How did the geography of the region effect the fertile crescent? What makes people believe that the fertile crescent has a challenging environment?

24 Read Actively 2. Respond to questions and use context clues for unfamiliar words. Example: What does it mean to barter for goods?

25 Read Actively 3. React to unclear passages, confusing terms, questionable statements by generating additional questions. Example: What were the real effects of irrigation, and how did they irrigate??
