What is Impressionism? Impressionism is an art style that first appeared in the late 1800’s in Europe during the Industrial Revolution. This style came, in part, as a reaction to the invention of the camera. The main goal of Impressionists was to capture the world around them- -especially the modern and natural worlds where people were doing ordinary things. In a wish to capture nature’s fleeting moment led many Impressionists to paint the same scene at different times and in different weather. They worked fast to capture the moment before the light changed and often painted from real life, or en plein air (in the open air or outside). Artists painted with small strokes of color, feathery style, and bright colors. Impressionism was originally intended as an insult. Critics said Impressionists couldn’t draw and their colors were considered vulgar. Some famous Impressionists are: Claude Monet, Edouard Manet, Mary Cassatt, Pierre Auguste Renoir, and Edgar Degas, Vincent Van Gogh

Before and After These new paintings that were being created by Van Gogh during this period were near opposites of his earlier pieces. To the left there are two paintings of churches. The first (on the far left) was painted before Gogh became influenced by the Impressionist and Post Impressionist. The other (on the right) was painted after he moved to Paris in 1886. As one can plainly see, they are very different representation of churches. Both paintings have aspects that make them great!
