Pablo Picasso was one of the greatest artist of the 20 th Century. He was born in Malaga Spain in 1881 His father was an art teacher, and Picasso always wanted to be a famous artist.

Picasso’s painting style changed more over the course of his life than any other artist. The painting on the left was done when he was 15 years old, the one on the right was done when he was 57 years old. What differences do you see?

When Picasso was 19, he left Spain and moved to France where he began to paint like a “French artist.” Picasso (1900) Renoir (1876) What are some similarities in these two pieces?

In the early 1900s Picasso went through a very sad period in his life. His best friend died, he was not selling any of his paintings, and he was starving to death. The painting done during this time were apart of “The Blue Period”

Picasso’s “Blue Period” ended when he met a girl named Fernande. They fell in love and his paintings began to show his emotions. This time in his life was called “The Rose Period”

The Rose Period did not last very long, Picasso quickly found a new and exciting way to paint…. Cubism! This style of painting is what made Picasso famous.

Over the years, his paintings became much more colorful and flatter looking. It also became much easier to see what he was painting.

Picasso had visited Rome in 1921 when he returned home he began to paint like this. Why do you think he began to paint like this after visiting Rome?

In 1937 something happened that made Picasso paint his most powerful and serious painting. During a Spanish civil war the small town of Guernica was destroyed by bombs. Thousands of innocent people were killed and injured. He named the painting “Guernica”. This painting is 12 feet high and 25 feet wide.

The thing that made Picasso such a great artist was his originality. He was constantly trying different things his whole life. Picasso lived to be 92 years old. He is one of the most famous artists of all time.
