Step 7: Choose a Style and Color Scheme Style refers to the overall characteristics of design.
11
Design Styles Housing & Interior Design
12
Traditional If you like very tailored, neat and tidy looks, this may be a sign of traditional. Traditional is generally more formal and classic. Conservatism is the key to traditional styles. This style has a mix of sharp stripes and traditional floral with brass, or antique brass accessories. Traditional is also very symmetrical. Pictures, lamps and accessories are balanced.

Contemporary If you like clean lines, bold colors and unique uses of natural products – such as metal, glass, stainless steel – this may be the style for you. Abstract paintings and artwork will be a part of contemporary. Asymmetry is used in this style - with cooler colors. Contemporary has a “colder” feeling, not always so warm and cozy.

Victorian The Victorian style is very “fussy”. Lots of ruffles, lace and velvet upholstery are used. Floral, bold wallpaper, deep colors – such as reds, navies and greens – are mixed with ornate woodcarvings. It tends to have a cluttered look, with the use of many accessories, patterns and pictures with a frilly flair to them.

Shabby Chic This is somewhat an eclectic style. It is a loose, not so tailored look. Real simple color combinations are used with muted or faded colors and floral patterns. The upholstery on furniture is made to look like a slipcover.

Cottage Style This will have somewhat of a country flair with a little contemporary twist. Cottage style uses wood furniture painted in light whites, off-whites and sage greens. Soft, faded floral fabrics mixed with checks and plaids are used. Even some crackle- finish, old looking pieces of furniture will be mixed with antiques. Flowers and plants are used to accessorize.

Mission/ Shaker Style This is a very popular style right now. Furniture uses straight lines, generally with various shades of oak finish and stained glass accents. You will find deep olive greens, worn brown caramel leather and deep plaid fabrics as the basic color scheme.

Color Schemes Should support the style chosen Consider wood tones and furniture.

Color Schemes –Monochromatic – one hue using different tints, shades and intensities. Very restful to look at. A neutral can be added for contrast and interest. –Analogous – 3 to 6 colors next to each other on the color wheel. May use different values and intensities for some contrast. –Complementary – two colors opposite each other on the color wheel Tints and shades of complements can be sophisticated and pleasing. –Triad – 3 colors equidistant on the wheel. A great deal of contrast. May use primarily one color and the other two for accent. –Split-Complementary – uses three colors; one color with the two colors on either side of its complements. A bright color scheme, use with care. –Accented Neutral – combines white, black, gray or beige with an accent color. Very pleasing to the eye. Easy to look at.
33
Step 8: Select Backgrounds, Furniture, Lighting and Accessories Backgrounds - Harmonize –Floors –Walls –Ceilings –Windows –Materials –Colors –Patterns –Textures

Types of Drawings Pictorial Drawing – shows the viewer several surfaces in the room simultaneously. –One point perspective – shows what is seen when the viewer looks at the opposite wall. –Two-point perspective – illustrates what you can see when looking at the corner where two floors meet.
37
Types of Drawings Rendering – a drawing in which the designer adds realistic details, such as textures, shadows, shadings and color. Overlay – a sheet of transparent material that is placed over a basic drawing. –Raised –Lowered
