Welcome to Pre-AP Chemistry Mrs. Ahrens
2
This year your student will be… Learning an amazing branch of science. After all, everything boils down to Chemistry. Problem solving. Performing laboratory experiments. Learning critical thinking skills. Hopefully having fun…
3
Class structure The students will be studying the course in Units based on the standards. They will have handouts assignments to complete. Laboratories-We will be doing labs every Unit.
4
Time Requirement Students will find success in this class if they dedicate 30 minutes a night to this class. The 30 minutes could be spent studying the power points, pre-labs, studying for the tests, or completing the assignments. If they diligently commit 30 minutes a night to this class, they should have no trouble.
5
Laboratory portion of class Due to the nature of the course, students must: –Wear shoes that cover the entire foot (think athletic shoes) –Wear required protective gear at all times in the lab. –Preferably, wear cotton clothes to lab (even more preferred are t-shirts and jeans).
6
Plan of Action We will be covering all the required materials and working to prepare them for their Standard of Learning Exam in the spring. My hope is that the students will do the studying of lecture notes and will do real work in class. If you would like to have a textbook issued to your student, please have them see me.

My philosophies (some at least) This is a comprehensive class. It is cumulative. It is NOT, and NEVER will be, a regurgitate and dump class. I don’t waste time, energy, or their precious amount of brain space memorizing or learning things that are unnecessary to the course.
8
SCHOOL FUSION Everything we do in this class will be posted to School Fusion so that you can keep track of your student’s schedule in this class. I update my grades and School Fusion at least once a week. This is a great way for you to keep track of what your student is doing in my class.
9
Communication I use remind to send text messages to the students to remind them of things they need to do. They also have my cell phone number to use if they are struggling. They have been told to take a picture of what they are working on and text it to me.
10
Needed Supplies Each student was asked to bring in 2 rolls of paper towels and a box of non latex gloves. Other supplies that are needed are: –Neon dry erase markers –Black dry erase markers (or just regular colored) –AAA Batteries –Hand soap (refill bottles only) –Dish washing detergent –Tissues –Hydrogen peroxide –Wooden coffee stirrers

Please contact me… If you have any questions. If you have a concern. If you want to share something with me that you are proud of your student so I can say something to them.
