Grade 2 Math
2
Math Content Standards Organized by grade level math topic These primarily guide instruction Math Practice Standards Intended to develop “mathematical thinkers” These are interwoven in all lessons and all grades
3
Operations and Algebraic Thinking Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. Add and subtract within 20. Work with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication. Number and Operations in Base Ten Understand place value. Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract. Measurement and Data Measure and estimate lengths in standard units. Relate addition and subtraction to length. Work with time and money. Represent and interpret data. Geometry Reason with shapes and their attributes
4
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them Reason abstractly and quantitatively Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Model with mathematics Use appropriate tools strategically Attend to precision Look for and make use of structure Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
5
Number and Operations in Base Ten Understand place value. Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract.
6
200 + 30 + 3 = 233
7
The standard algorithm is not taught until third grade. In grade two students learn strategies for addition to develop their number sense. One strategy taught is using place value (base-ten blocks) to add two digit numbers.
8
Try drawing place value blocks to add using a place value mat and dry erase marker. You could also cut out place value pictures.
9
Make a Place value picture!
