Process Standards (1) Mathematical process standards. The student uses mathematical processes to acquire and demonstrate mathematical understanding. (A) apply mathematics to problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace; (B) use a problem-solving model that incorporates analyzing given information, formulating a plan or strategy, determining a solution, justifying the solution, and evaluating the problem-solving process and the reasonableness of the solution; 5 Copyright © Texas Education Agency 2015. 6 Process Standards Grade 4 (2) Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to represent, compare, and order whole numbers and decimals and understand relationships related to place value. The student is expected to: (3) Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to represent and generate fractions to solve problems. The student is expected to: 6 Copyright © Texas Education Agency 2015. All rights reserved.

Process Standards  The process standards are not to be taught or assessed in isolation.  The process standards add both rigor and relevance. 7 Copyright © Texas Education Agency 2015. 8 The student is expected to: (A) apply mathematics to problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace; 8 Copyright © Texas Education Agency 2015. All rights reserved. (B) use a problem-solving model that incorporates analyzing given information, formulating a plan or strategy, determining a solution, justifying the solution, and evaluating the problem-solving process and the reasonableness of the solution; This standard adds a real-world application. The problem-solving process is similar to the process used in science.

(C) select tools, including real objects, manipulatives, paper and pencil, and technology as appropriate, and techniques, including mental math, estimation, and number sense as appropriate, to solve problems; 9 Copyright © Texas Education Agency 2015. All rights reserved. This standard asks the student to select from a variety of tools to solve a problem. The student is expected to:

(D) communicate mathematical ideas, reasoning, and their implications using multiple representations, including symbols, diagrams, graphs, and language as appropriate; 10 Copyright © Texas Education Agency 2015. All rights reserved. (E) create and use representations to organize, record, and communicate mathematical ideas; This standard expects students to communicate using multiple representations. This standard expects students to create and use a representation.

The student is expected to: (F) analyze mathematical relationships to connect and communicate mathematical ideas; and 11 Copyright © Texas Education Agency 2015. All rights reserved. (G) display, explain, and justify mathematical ideas and arguments using precise mathematical language in written or oral communication. This standard expects students to make connections and communicate mathematical ideas. This standard emphasizes mathematical language.
