What is a Resume? It is your first impression Guide for an interviewer or resume evaluator Summary of qualifications Condensed history of your –education, activities, community service, work experience, etc. Evolutionary –As you gain more experience, accomplish goals, etc. RESUMES SHOULD BE UPDATED EVERY 6 months

Resume Tid-bits One page –Nice resume paper –Cover letter too (need to match) –NEEDS TO BE A QUALITY COPY Clean & Neat –Items need to line up Clear readable type NO ERRORS Avoid abbreviations and acronyms –They are NOT known by all (FBLA) Should be easy to read and get attention –Use appropriate font, capitalization, bullets, underline, bold, italics

Resume Styles/Formats Chronological –Most popular –Views career progression –List most recent first –Emphasizes employment history –Students can use a chronological resume to highlight their “career” as a student Resent Graduate –Minimal work experience –Emphasize training –Emphasized education –Emphasized field of study –Emphasizes service

Resume Headings Contact Information* –Where you can be reached –Name, Address, Phone, Cell, Email (appropriate) Objective* –Short sentence to inform the person evaluating resume what you are applying for, it could be a scholarship or a job –THIS NEEDS TO BE ADJUSTED FOR EACH RESUME Personal Characteristics* –Job or Non-Job related personality traits –Dependable, Punctual, Responsible, Team Player, etc.

Resume Headings Education* –Start with the most recent academic program –Name of institution, address, dates, degree, GPA (if higher than 3.5) Attending Gresham High School 1200 N. Main Street Gresham, OR 97030 Graduation June 2010; 3.5 GPA –THERE ARE LOTS OF WAY YOU CAN DO EDUCATION Highlighted Coursework, Skills, Abilities (all the same) –Interests to the resume evaluator anything that may help –Honors classes, AP classes, advanced language, multiple languages, typing, web design, computer courses, leadership, etc.

Resume Headings Activities Athletics Organizations –School organization, sports, leadership, church involvement, outdoor school, etc. –Any activity that demonstrates a useful skill or experience that would be beneficial Volunteer Work or Community Service Qualifications, Related Experience –Think of what you have done: toy drive, canned food drive, organizing events, participating in events.

Resume Headings Work Experience –Reflects skills, qualifications, and accomplishments –Most recent employer first –Dates, employer’s names, job title, and description of duties EXAMPLE: Willamette Industries; Boring, OR2009-Present Composing and typing routine correspondence, filing customer records, placing and answering telephone calls, and preparing invoices.

Writing in Resume DO NOT WRITE: I baby sit, I change diapers, clean up, take out garbage, etc. I make pizzas, clean the floor, take money, place orders, etc. INSTEAD WRITE: Provide care for two children under the age of three. Currently responsible for planning learning activities and teaching appropriate manners. Provide excellent customer service in a high pace fast food environment, responsible for cash management and customer satisfactions.

References/Letters of Rec. References –People who will say great things about you –Your relatives will not count –Ask your teachers, clergy, current boss, etc. Letters of Recommendation –Give current copy of resume and cover letter requesting –Give at least two weeks to write –Do not make assumptions
