2 ADJACENT (ADJ) Near, next to, adjoining Syn: alongside, nearby, neighboring Ant: faraway, distant Example: His gaze fell to the single sign of disorder in the living area: the book she left on the table adjacent to the couch.

3 ALIGHT (V) (ADJ) (V) to get down from, step down from; to come down from the air, land; (adj) lighted up Syn: dismount, land, touch down Ant: mount, board, take off Example: In the emergency evacuation, the airplane passengers alighted down the inflatable stairs to the ground.

4 BARREN (ADJ) Not productive, bare Syn: Unproductive, sterile, desolate, arid Ant: Fertile, fruitful During the Dust Bowl, the farmers could not grow crops on the barren land.

5 DISRUPT (V) To break up, disturb Syn: upset, displace, disorder Ant: organize, arrange The unexpected visit disrupted my plans for the weekend.

6 DYNASTY(N) A powerful family or group of rulers that maintains its position or power for some time. Syn: ruling house, regime The famous Tang dynasty ruled China for hundreds of years.

7 FORETASTE (N) An advance indication, sample, or warning Syn: preview, anticipation The preview before the movie gave me a foretaste of the upcoming films.

8 GERMINATE (V) To begin to grow, come into being Syn: sprout, shoot up, burgeon Ant: wither, die, stagnate, shrivel up The class watched the plant germinate, starting from a tiny seed and developing into a tremendous sunflower.

9 HUMDRUM (ADJ) Ordinary, dull, routine, without variation Syn: monotonous, prosaic, boring Ant: exciting, thrilling, exhilarating The homework was so humdrum that even watching the grass grow seemed more interesting.

10 HURTLE (V) To rush violently, dash headlong; to fling or hurl forcefully. Syn: speed, fly, catapult, fling Ant: crawl, creep Speeding down the street, the ambulance hurtled towards the victim.

11 INSINUATE (V) To suggest or hint slyly; to edge into something indirectly. Syn: Imply Ant: Barge in, broadcast The boy did not call the old woman fat, but through his sly comments and quiet jokes, he definitely insinuated it.

14 INTERMINABLE (ADJ) Endless, so long as to seem endless Syn: never-ending Ant: brief, short, fleeting When our flight was delayed another five hours, we felt as if the wait was interminable.

15 INTERROGATE (V) To ask questions, examine by questioning. Syn: question, query The detectives interrogated the witness for three hours, asking the important questions of who, what, when, where, and why.

16 RECOMPENSE (V) (N) To pay back; to give a reward; a payment for loss, service, or injury. Syn: repay; compensation When the students returned my missing bracelet, I was happy to give them a recompense of three cookies.

17 RENOVATE (V) To repair, restore to good condition, make new again. Syn: repair, recondition When Andrew and I bought our house, we immediately began to renovate by taking down walls, sanding furniture, and painting trim.

18 RÉSUMÉ (N) A brief summary; a short written account of one’s education, working experience, or qualifications for a job. Syn: synopsis Joseph applied for the new job online and sent over his résumé for the company to review.

19 SULLEN (ADJ) Silent or brooding because of ill humor, anger, or resentment; slow-moving, sluggish Syn: grumpy, surly, peevish, morose Ant: cheerful, blithe, vivacious The sullen child sat pouting in the back of the car because his mother would not give him a lollipop.

20 TRICKLE (V) (N) To flow or fall by drops or in a small stream; a small, irregular quantity of anything Syn: dribble, drizzle, drip, small amount Ant: gush, pour, flood, deluge Because there was a knot in the hose, the water trickled slowly.

21 TRIVIAL (ADJ) Not important, minor; ordinary, commonplace Syn: insignificant, trifling Ant: important, weighty The president cannot be bothered with trivial matters; instead, his attention must be focused on important matters.

22 TRUCE (N) A pause in fighting, temporary peace Syn: cease-fire Ant: war, warfare The fighting countries decided to truce so that their civilians could live in peace.

23 VICIOUS (ADJ) Evil, bad; spiteful; having bad habits or an ugly disposition; painfully severe or extreme Syn: wicked, malicious Ant: good, kind, kindly, mild The vicious witch cast an evil spell on the children.
