FERROUS ALLOY Are alloys with iron as its main constituent Include mild steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron and wrought iron These metals are mostly used because of their tensile strength and durability Most of them are vulnerable to rust Have magnetic properties, making them very useful in the creation of large motors and electrical appliances

NAMECONSIST OFPROPERTIESUSES Mild SteelCarbon 0.1 - 0.3% Iron 99.9 - 99.7% Tough, high tensile strength, can be case hardened, rusts very easily Most common metal used in school workshops. Used in general metal products and engineering Carbon SteelCarbon 0.6 - 1.4% Iron 99.4 - 98.6% Tough, can be hardened and tempered Cutting tools such as drills Stainless Steel Iron, nickel and chromium Tough, resistant to rust and stains Cutlery, medical instruments Cast IronCarbon 2 - 6% Iron 98 - 94% Strong but brittle, compressive strength very high Castings, manhole covers, engines Wrought IronAlmost 100% ironFibrous, tough, ductile, resistant to rust Ornamental gates and railings. Not in much use today

NON FERROUS ALLOY Are alloys with no iron element in it Include aluminium, brass, copper, nickel, tin, lead, zinc, gold and silver These metals are more malleable and much lighter Have an excellent resistance to rust and corrosion Non-magnetic, making them perfect to be use in small electronics and as electrical wiring

NAMECONSIST OFPROPERTIESUSES AluminiumCopper and manganese Light, do not rust or corrode Used in aircraft manufacture, window frames and some kitchen ware SilverNaturally occurring substances Highest electrical conductivity, highest thermal conductivity Used for decorative impact in jewellery and ornaments, to solder different metals together CopperNaturally occurring substance Very ductile, malleable, high electrical and heat conductivity Sheet roofing, cartridge cases, bushings, wire, bearings, and statues. BrassCopper 60-68% Zinc 32-40% Low melting point, high heat conductivity Used for ornamental purposes and within electrical fittings LeadNaturally occurring substance Heavy, very soft, low strength Used for x-ray protection, manufacturing electrical equipment TinNaturally occurring substances Silvery, malleable, low toxicity, ductile Major use is in coating steel, can act as an alloying element

DIFFERENCES FERROUS ALLOYNON FERROUS ALLOY Consist of ironNo iron High tensile strength, durabilityLighter, malleable Vulnerable to rustResistance to rust MagneticNon magnetic
