3 Verbal Irony Just like it sounds, verbal irony is used when someone says one thing but means the opposite. An example would be wishing someone luck by saying, “Break a leg!” (Situational irony would be if they actually did!) Sarcasm can be considered an extreme form of verbal irony.

4 Situational Irony This describes an event (or “situation”) that turns out contrary to what you thought would happen. 5 Dramatic Irony Dramatic irony occurs when the reader or audience knows something that the character does not.
