The Well-being programme Background Board announcement March 2005 £165m, of which £45m committed to healthy eating The programme Aim: to support communities in need to create healthier lifestyles and improve their well-being 3 strands: mental health, physical activity and healthy eating Outcomes: People and communities have improved mental well- being People are more physically active Children, parents & wider community eat more healthily

W ell-being general principles Up to 20 portfolios Holistic approaches to health & well-being: portfolios should ideally cross over more than one strand Partnership working across health and other sectors Providing support to those ‘in need’ Adding value to existing provision to build on what works Encourage innovation and piloting of new approaches

Mental Health Outcome – to improve people’s mental well-being Funding priorities Increase user involvement in the design, development and running of projects Improve mental well-being by developing preventative approaches to common mental health problems (including stress, depression and anxiety disorders) Contribute towards changing perspectives on mental health by tackling stigma within communities and positively promoting mental health Examples of the types of project we could fund Self-help groups, advocacy/advice services, workplace support, family support, physical health promotion

Healthy Eating Outcome - children, parents & wider community eat more healthily Funding priorities Promote healthy eating for children, parents and the wider community Build greater access to healthy foods to encourage increased consumption and healthier choices for everyone Increase children’s knowledge of healthy foods, food skills and improve their eating habits Examples of the types of projects we could fund Cookery courses, mobile vegetable vans, healthy food boxes, food co-operatives, education projects encouraging the understand of food production

Physical Activity Outcome - people are more physically active Funding priorities Encourage those who have the most sedentary lifestyles to increase their activity levels Promote increased physical activity in daily life and encourage individuals to incorporate more activity into their daily lives and routines Improve the ability of communities to organise and run projects that provide opportunities for local people to become more active Examples of the type of projects that we could fund Community sport, dance, walking, cycling, active travel

Funding –Portfolio delivery method – through one lead organisation –MINIMUM available of £1 million per portfolio –Two timetables – standard route and early application –Mainly revenue projects, although a maximum of 15% (up to £50K) of the funding sought per project can be for capital items or refurbishment (not buildings)

Who can apply? –Statutory, voluntary and community sector, private organisations and social enterprises –Eligibility of lead partners –Government Offices –Strategic Health Authorities –Regional Development Agencies etc

Portfolios Stage one –Identify needs and develop a strategy to address them –Complete a first stage application form -Applications that meet criteria are invited to stage two Stage two –Compile a portfolio of individual projects –Send in a second stage application form

Timetable – Standard route Launch Date 12 April 2006 Complete first stage application By 28 July 2006 Decision within 4 months (November 06) Compile portfolio and second stage By 1 March 2007 Decision Approximately 4 months (June 07)

Early Applications –No development funding is available if you choose this route –We require full applications to be able to assess quickly –Need to be confident that Portfolio is complete at stage two –Timetable: –Completion of first stage application – 10 th June 2006 –Decision within two months –Compile portfolio and second stage – 13 th October 2006 –Decision within 2 months

Well-being issues -Strategic programme -National Projects: need to have projects in the majority of Government regions. –Regional Projects :need to cover a reasonable geographical area
