3 CTE INITIATIVES CTE: Learning that Works for America Industry Certification and Credentialing Workplace Readiness Skills College and Career Readiness –Career Coach at each High School –Relevant, Updated Curriculum –Up-to-Date Technology and Equipment –Dual Enrollment Programs with Blue Ridge and Dabney Lancaster Community Colleges –Every 8 th Grader Required to Take Keyboarding and Computer Applications CanDo for Rating Student Competencies

4 LOCAL AND STATE INITIATIVES First-year MTC Students may elect to take one or two courses Effective 2011-2012: Economics and Personal Finance required for all students seeking Standard or Advanced Diploma –Currently offered at SHS and ERHS Effective 2012-2013: New Diploma Offerings – Standard Technical, Advanced Technical Students may earn verified credits for passing approved Industry Certification Exams

5 CHALLENGES FOR CTE Budget Items –2011-12 Perkins funding reduced statewide, 3.2% reduction for RCPS. –Reduced state funding forces local cuts to balance the budget –Increase in cost of instructional materials –Limited state funding for industry certification Slight Enrollment Decline –Increasing graduation requirements –No new courses in summer school –Teachers shared between schools Increased Accountability

6 STRONG SUPPORT FOR CTE Principals, CO Leaders, School Board, Parents and Students Blue Ridge Community College BRCC Career Pathways Consortium –Career Coach Program –Grants for CTE Staff Business Partners and Donors Local Advisory Board Serving RCPS, HCPS, and MTC VACTEA (Assoc. for CTE Administrators) DOE and CTE Resource Center

7 FINE ARTS INSTRUCTION Comprehensive PreK-12 Program Elementary Art and Music (including Orff) –Students receive music instruction once per week for entire year; art instruction once per week for a semester. Rehearsals for evening programs held before, during, and after-school. Art, Choral Music, Drama/Theater, Instrumental Music in Middle/High School –Students select courses of interest. –Sixth grade students select 4 or 6 exploratory courses in fine arts or other electives. –Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced Art, Drama/Theater, Music Courses in High School

8 FINE ARTS INSTRUCTION, cont. Advanced Placement Courses (new for 2010-11): –Music Theory –Art History –Studio Design: 2-D, 3-D, and Drawing In-school and extra-curricular activities Teachers supplement instruction with field trips, guest conductors and clinicians, and school and community service projects Talented teachers in all levels who are strong advocates, and perform their craft in and out of the classroom/school

9 STRONG SUPPORT, PROGRAMS, AND SHOWCASE EVENTS Strong support from school community, Principals, CO Leaders, School Board Community performances, exhibits All-District and All-State Choral and Band students each year All City-County Honor Band Festival with HCPS and EMHS All-County Middle and High School Chorus Outstanding musicals that showcase all of the arts in our schools

12 CHALLENGES FOR FINE ARTS Budget Items –Reduced state funding has had drastic effect –Increasing costs – supplies, instrument repair –No funding available for the purchase of new instruments, stage or concert equipment –Visionary, long-range planning difficult when budget forecast is uncertain Enrollment Decline –Students sacrifice the arts for remediation –No new courses in summer school, and increasing graduation requirements Teacher-sharing presents challenges when trying to build programs
