WE MULTIPLY SUCCESS 2 2 National Math and Science Initiative The National Math and Science Initiative is an agent of change focused on addressing the national STEM crisis. NMSI’s Mission: NMSI brings best practices in management to the education sector by taking proven programs with quantifiable results to national scale: APTIP, UTEACH, and Initiative for Military Families. Our programs impact both the existing and the future teacher cores. NMSI Approach:

WE MULTIPLY SUCCESS 9 Advanced Placement Training and Incentive Program 9 The Advanced Placement Training and Incentive Program (APTIP) is a comprehensive approach that increases teacher effectiveness and student achievement through training, teacher and student support, vertical teaming, open enrollment, and incentives. The program increases dramatically the number of students taking and passing AP math, science, and English exams, and expands access to traditionally under-represented students. Elements of Success
10
WE MULTIPLY SUCCESS 10 Student Support Program Management Awards Teacher Support Program Overview: APTIP improves student achievement by increasing the number and diversity of students taking and passing College Board Advanced Placement courses and exams in math, science, and English. APTIP is a comprehensive program that supports students and teachers with teacher training, vertical teaming, open and encouraged enrollment in AP courses, student study sessions, financial incentives based on academic achievement, individualized achievement goals, and data collection. Program Impact: By fundamentally transforming a school’s culture of expectations, APTIP achieves dramatic results, including 216% increase in passing AP math, science, and English exam scores among African-American and Hispanic students and 144% increase in passing AP math and science exam scores among female students. NMSI’s Advanced Placement Training and Incentive Program (APTIP)
11
WE MULTIPLY SUCCESS 11 APTIP Significant Track Record 11 7.1% of Overall Passing 4.9% of Minorities’ Passing 10 Dallas ISD Schools – continuing to produce dramatic results.

12 WE MULTIPLY SUCCESS Increases in African-American and Hispanic student achievement in the 10 DISD AP program schools 12 Source: The College Board Minority qualifying scores are 33 times higher in 15 years in the participating DISD schools. Qualifying scores achieved by African-American and Hispanic students on AP exams in math, science, and English in 10 Dallas ISD program schools
13
Results: Increases in Student Achievement AP MSE is nearly six times the national avg. AP MS FEMALE students is over seven times the nat’l avg. AP MSE AFRICAN-AMERICAN AND HISPANIC STUDENTS is over four times the national avg. *Data of Cohort I NMSI program schools. NMSI Program Schools * % Increase, Exams Passed

WE MULTIPLY SUCCESS 14 Source: College Board. Total population in NMSI schools is approximately 1.4% of US population. 7.1% of Overall Passing NMSI schools’ increase in passing math, science and English scores as a % of U.S. increase 4.9% of Minorities’ Passing 6.9% of Overall Passing 1.0% of US high schools Number of NMSI schools vs Total number of high schools in the U.S. NMSI’s 228 program high schools represent only one percent of the total 23,000+ high schools in the U.S., yet they account for 6.9% of the overall U.S. percent increase in AP MSE passing scores. Results: Increases in Student Achievement
15
WE MULTIPLY SUCCESS 15 Initiative for Military Families (IMF) 15 The Initiative for Military Families (IMF) is an innovative partnership between NMSI, the Military Child Education Coalition, the Military Impacted Schools Association, several branches of the Department of Defense, and various corporations and foundations to support children in America’s military families. NMSI does so by implementing the Advanced Placement Training and Incentive Program across a network of high schools serving military installations.
16
WE MULTIPLY SUCCESS 16 IMF Program Through this initiative, we hope to expand NMSI APTAP to over 150 public high schools serving a high percentage of military families resulting in a level of consistency in rigorous coursework that will travel with a student wherever a parent's military duty calls. 16 The IMF program was launched in fall 2010 in four high schools: 1.Ellison High School in Killeen, TX 2.Harker Heights High School in Killeen, TX 3.Hopkinsville High School in Christian County, KY 4.Christian County High School in Christian County, KY These four initial schools were sponsored by Lockheed Martin Corporation.

20
20 WE MULTIPLY SUCCESS UTeach Program Elements of Success 1.STEP Courses: Active Student Recruitment and Support 2.Early, Continuous and Intensive Teaching Experiences, including internships 3.Dedicated Master Teachers serving as Coaches, Mentors, Instructors and Teacher Models 4.Compact, Flexible 4 Year Degree Plans in Math and Science with Teaching Certification 5.Cross-College Collaboration 6.Rigorous, Research-Based, Focused Instruction in blended Science and Math Pedagogy 7.Induction Support for New Teachers
21
21 WE MULTIPLY SUCCESS UTeach: A Proven Program The UTeach program was developed at The University of Texas at Austin to help address the disturbing shortage of qualified math and science teachers in this country. UTeach integrates a rigorous math and/or science major, research experience, acquisition of effective, inquiry-based teaching techniques, field experience, and certification in a 4-year program.
22
22 WE MULTIPLY SUCCESS Project Based Instruction/Research Experience UTeach students are taught using inquiry based teaching techniques UTeach students are trained in project based instruction, the creative use of technology in teaching, team-based approaches to learning A research experience is part of their training in a course designed for this purpose by research faculty in Natural Sciences
